Where do I start?

I have zero experience of sewing. I would like to be able to do basic repairs/ hems etc.
What would you suggest for starters?

Is there an adult education course you can sign up for?

It is quite hard to prepare for repairs as you just tackle them as they arise.

You could make something using a paper pattern, picking an "easy" one, but you would undoubtably need a sewing machine.

I am a reasonably skilled sewer needlewoman but, tbh, only ever make costumes for school plays (easy), sew on buttons, repair hems using Wundaweb.
