Embroidery hoop and thread

I want to be a bit more adventurous with dd who is 3. We want to move on from paper crafts to sewing. Where is the best place to buy a nice embroidery hoop wool and pattern? I haven't done it since primary so am a total beginner myself. Would like a full kit with instructions but live in a town with no crafty shops. Ideally I'd like to stitch out her name and then frame it. Does this even make sense?? Gawd knows!!

How about trying plastic canvas first.

You might want to have a go with 6 count Binca fabric - that's like large size cross stitch fabric, and some embroidery thread - possibly not the stranded stuff but "perle cotton" might be good. It's simple cross stitch you can do with a blunt plastic needle. You could just make up your own designs or do simple rows of stitches.

I only mention it because this kind of thing was my own very first sewing effort at pre-school age .

Sewing through punched cards with wool might also help her get needle/thread control, or there are kits with felt you can get from suppliers like Yellow Moon.

Honestly I'd say at 3 that she's really a bit too young, she won't have fully developed her pincer grip and trying to do that kind of thing might make her hand sore. If that's the kind of thing you'd like to do with her, could I suggest instead maybe weaving with paper or getting some of those cards with punched holes for threading shoelaces through?

I love this kind of stuff but I work in a nursery and I wouldn't try anything needing such precise movements xx

I think three is a bit too young also. But if you're going to do it, I'd agree with the punched card or make your own for her.

My DC loved those lacing cards. DD is 6 and now enjoys those felt sewing kits (still pre punched) and at the same age DS liked the cross stitch canvas stuff - but IMHO 3 is too young for either.
