Need to make an elf costume ASAP, please help!

Dd needs an elf costume that she can ride in. (Don't ask!)
I thought it would be really simple to find a pattern via google but i cant find one.

I'm ok with a sewing machine but hopeless at inventing patterns. I have a couple of metres of green polycotton and half a metre of red polycotton. The hat needs to go on over her riding hat! I'm not able to get out to buy more stuff I'm afraid.

Any thoughts please???

Simple shift ... Basically a pillowcase with armholes
Red sash / belt
Cut points into the bottom of the shift
Hat... Make triangular pattern with newspaper and adjust to fit over riding hat
Wear with normal jods
Cut Holly/tree/bauble shapes for decoration

Or bung it over here and I will make it :)

What Norks said really. I might make a tabard rather than a shift (two rectangles sewn together with a hole in that seam for the head) but the principle is the same

Norks, if only I could take you up on that!! On my knees here atm and no chance at all to make it today now. With dds Christmas concerts and my work and my medical appts, I don't know how I'm going to do it.

But if I magically got some time and energy then that sounds really doable. Do I need to use pinking shears or hem the bottom or can I get away with just leaving it to fray a bit? Thank you both.

Whocaresabout fraying? Poly cotton shouldn't fray hugely

I reckon, I need to quit my whinging and just make the blasted thing!

Post it to me tomorrow. I will turn it around and post it back to you by Friday.

It means a huge amount to me. You are right though, it would be harder work to get to the post office as I'm working a full day tomorrow. But you are brilliant and that had cheered me up!

Dh has reminded me the school that I work at has costumes for their grotto. I can ask to borrow one. Yay! If it tore or something then I have a good long time to replace it.
