decopatch

I am thinking of doing something with the boring chairs and table that DD has from Ikea.

I have never decopatched anything before. Can I do it to furniture? Any tips? Where's a good (cheap) place to get the paper and glue?

Any help and pointers much appreciated.

I'm sure the Hobbycraft leaflet on Decopatch has pictures of chairs etc so I'm assuming the theory is "yes". I didn't get past reading the leaflet though so have no further insight I'm afraid. I would imagine you'd need a lot of varnish though to make the surface hard wearing enough.

I have a friend who is in the process of doing this (with I suspect the self same furniture). It is fairly easy and quite absorbing but it's taken a long time and a lot - a lot - of pricey branded Decopatch glue and paper. I think you can use normal PVA glue (with a final varnish layer) and any sort of paper (maps, wrapping paper, pages from old books etc) though it's maybe trickier to use. There are loads of decoupage tutorials on the web - try Pinterest for starters.

Hi, you can use mod podge to do this - available on amazon. My tip would be to buy a brayer - it's a tool that you use to smooth out the bubbles in the paper - it's hard to smooth them out without one and you'll end up with a very un-smooth wrinkled finish! You can get these on amazon too.

Also, with glue, less is more - apply a thin layer and leave it 30 seconds before you carefully glue the paper on - too much glue and you'll end up with a wrinkled mess.

Definitely have a trial run or two on something else before you do the furniture, too.

I am obsessed with the decopatch stuff, the papers are so gorgeous, I am gutted I am not allowed to do our staircase. The glue isn't too badly priced if you buy it in large quantities and it has a better effect on the papers than PVA (IMO) and I've found it very durable and hardwearing.

You certainly can decoupage furniture (decoupage is the technique, Decopatch is a brand of decoupage products) but I wouldn't advise using PVA as it yellows over time.

Found some inspiring pieces on pintrest & ikea hackers (love that site, why did I never know about it).

I think I am going to go for some wrapping paper - cheaper and more readily available.

I got the glue from Hobbycraft and picked up some tissue paper that I liked.

So far I have done 1 small chair. The seat is decoupage and the rest I have painted with some pink paint.
I did the other chair and table top tonight (takes no time at all).

I think that it doesn't look bad at all. Certainly better than it did before. And DD is so impressed that she wants the once-ugly chairs and table in her bedroom.

We went to Hobbycraft a few weeks ago and they had a decopatch stand. Gave it ago and loved so my mums bought me some bits for Xmas and I can't wait to get started. I keep finding things where I think I can decopatch that but am planning to start with something small.

Paneer, sounds like it went really well. I've found www.artyfect.com to be much cheaper than Hobbycraft

I sealed DD's chair with spray on varnish [plasticote] available in DIY stores as well as hobbycraft. It makes it a bit more hardwearing when she drags things about. I used some handmade paper from the fair trade shop, purple/teal with some sparkly bits in it, worked lovely!
