Go and have a look at Ravelry - you don't have to join, you can browse as a visitor - and there are lots of lovely patterns, many with photos, and many free to download too - use the advanced search facility under Patterns.

Ravelry is amazing. You need never buy a pattern again.

I'm a big fan of Carina Spencer.

For basic patterns you can't go wrong with a Rowan Collection or Sirdar Pattern or two.

I would agree, though - Ravelry is the best place to look for patterns. Many of them you can then buy through the site but it's great just for inspiration too. You can buy paper patterns for delivery from John Lewis, Deramores, my fave McA and many others.

plenty of free patterns on ravelry, just use all the filters, or you'll be there for ever.
