Knitting pattern help required, please!

I'm a novice and I've hit the following confusing instruction:

"K. 22, k. 2 tog., (k. 2, k. 2 tog.) twice, k. 22"

So...knit 22 then knit 2 together, but what's the bit in brackets? And what needs to happen twice? In case it's relevant, I've worked out that there will be 54 stitches on the needle at this point.

I was doing so well till now! Any help very gratefully received.

The bit in brackets is done twice.

Right.

It's Knit 22 stitches, knit 2 stitches together. Then knit 2, knit 2 together. Then knit 2, knit 2 together again. Then knit 22 stitches.

You started with 54 stitches, after completing that row, you will have 51 stitches left.
