Plea to knitters: short row shaping WITHOUT the holes...?

Just can't get the hang of it. Am doing a practice swatch but keep getting holes when knitting together the wrap and the stitch. Have been trying to follow the instructions on knitty.com to no avail.
Need to master this before I do my next big project - help!
I realise it's hard to explain so any references on the web?
