Crochet patterns for animal hats (and yarn recommendations)

A little boy locally has lost his hair sn I set about making him a hat. He loves all animals so I made him a horse one.

I loves it and now wants more. I've spent days weeks on Ravelry and have got a cow and dragon patterns lined up. I've got the pattern from etsy with all the monster ears etc but does anyone have any ideas for other patterns?

Also which yarn do people recommend? I can only get stylecraft online but have access to Woolcraft in the local charity shop and can get king Cole bounty at the local supermarket. Are there any other recommendations? It needs to be acrylic and easily washed at quite a high temperature.

Thank you!

I think there were some tiger hats on Ravelry and I'm sure I saw a fabulous lion which would probable take ages.

Yarn wise... hmmm... I think Hayfield Bonus is a little squeaky/scratchy. There was another cheap acrylic that wasn't butI can't for the life of e remember which one Blush I used two types in a blanket I made for DD when I was learning - one was lovely, one was not. The orange Hayfield I've used in my rainbow blanket is scratchy so I think that was the duff brand.

I dont know about the others I'm afraid.

Patons do a cotton/poly blend that might be softer on delicate skin than acrylic, I'll dig mine out and check the label if you like?

Daisybell1 · 10/10/2012 08:18

Yes please Pid, that would be great. The mum has offered to pay but I don't know if I feel comfortable taking money.

Soup - thank you! I shall add tiger or lion to the list - he initially said cat but a lot of the patterns are very girly, sort of hello kitty style.

Where is the best place to order style.craft from if I go down that route? Oh, and is it easy to get standard weight DK white? All the local shops seem to have thin white, even if it says DK for baby patterns and I need a thickish one for the cow!

Hang on ... I found a fab cat on Ravelry whilst trying to find the lion I remembered...

SoupDragon · 10/10/2012 09:04

Cat
Rather nice tiger
Over the top tiger

I think Masons had the best price for Stylecraft (but check postage) and Deramores has 20% off until tomorrow (SC20). I've also ordered it from countrycraffts.org.uk

I think baby DK is thinner than ordinary DK.

Daisybell1 · 10/10/2012 09:51

Soup, if you think the tiger's ott, then you should see the cow!

:o

I saw a really OTT lion but I can't find it. It had a full mane!

craftynclothy · 10/10/2012 16:39

Afan Crafts is cheap if you're ordering around 4-6 balls. It's £1.30 a ball but you pay postage. I actually found it was cheaper than Deramores for a big order the other week too as anything over a certain weight is sent by courier at £7.50 and the cheaper price per ball cancelled out the £7.50 iyswim.

I think thats the first site I've seen where the "bright green" is almost true to colour!

PurplePidjin · 10/10/2012 17:50

I have a fridge an a dishwasher between my and my stash, i may need a day or two to find it...

SoupDragon · 10/10/2012 17:57

Sounds like bad planning to me...

PurplePidjin · 10/10/2012 18:07

New carpets in most of the house

SoupDragon · 10/10/2012 18:57

All the colour of baby sick I hope? :o

PurplePidjin · 10/10/2012 21:31

Yep, nice dark beige.

They'll be finished tomorrow

SoupDragon · 11/10/2012 07:07

:)

Daisybell1 · 11/10/2012 07:48

Sounds just like my house Pid, although we're not having works done, I just have yarn stuffed everywhere!!!

PurplePidjin · 11/10/2012 08:54

My yarn is organised, it just has 5 rooms full of furniture in front of it (hall, kitchen, stairs, upstairs hall, baby's room) including fridge, dw, crib, cot, book shelves, chest of drawers

It's Patons cotton something, i got it in Latvia but I've seen the brand here. Sirdar do some nice bamboo blends too, for softness :)

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 11/10/2012 21:59

I like to use sirdar dk snuggly, lovely and soft but mostly in pastel colours. Is style craft softer/ cheaper? Would like to find a yarn of equivalent softness that is cheaper and has a bigger colour range.

Daisybell1 · 13/10/2012 16:31

stylecraft is lovely, very soft. I got some more Woolcraft today and it seems softer. I also got some King Cole Moods and Comfort Aran and they all seem softer than previously. Whether other manufacturers are learning from Stylecraft, I'm not sure. I can't get orange so the tiger/lion will have to be ditched but I've nearly finished a Collie hat and have found the most gorgeous dragon to do next!

Daisybell1 · 14/10/2012 12:48

Collie hat completed - bring on the dragon!

I've just finished a basic dinosaur hat! It's a but iffy in places but I only started crocheting a month ago.

Daisybell1 · 15/10/2012 03:27

Ooh, do you have a pattern? (adds dinosaur to list)

PurplePidjin · 15/10/2012 08:54

We need pics!

On The List is a hat with antlers for PidjChick, but it remains to be seen if he arrives before i finish it Blush

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges · 15/10/2012 17:21

It's just a basic beanie with ear flaps in green, edged in red and with three spikes along the middle. Do you use pinterest?
