Has anyone ever done one, are they very ambitious for a not quite beginner??

They look like such fun but I dont know how to do a French Knot and am concerned a little.

(cross stitch btw)

Never done one but have done other Bothy kits and love them. Very easy to use, big charts over several pages, clear instructions.

If you are bothered by the french knots use seed beads in the right colour instead.

Yes very cheap. You need smallest and a fine needle rather than a tapestry one. French knots aren't difficult though so worth having a practice with them first.
