I done one last year for dd that's perfect, but I can't think what hook size I used. I started another last night using an 8, but it was very 'gappy' and if I'd continued I think it would've been huge!
I'll try again tonight using a 6.

So glad I have all of you to ask Smile

Pidj I just have to say that I'm in awe of your crochet knowledge. Every time you post I am more impressed.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 09/11/2012 23:41

Hi all,

Just spent seven weeks in hospital and have managed to teach myself how to crochet. I am happily crocheting granny squares with the idea of sewing them together to make a blanket.

However I am rapidly running out of wool. I need to stock up but pretty skint due to being on half pay whilst ill. Got at least another six weeks before I can go back to work so lots of time to fill.

So does anybody know where I can get some cheap wool? Have looked on eBay but it all seems so expensive.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

PurplePidjin · 11/11/2012 14:24

Hi, Gorja, hope you're recovering? Deramores are good, like them on facebook for extra discounts, or scout out your local charity shops :)

Poundstretcher near me stocks cheap acrylic, as do some local post offices :)

SoupDragon · 11/11/2012 14:37

Stylecraft Special DK is a good balance between softness and price. Good value for money.

Charity shops are a good shout and Blacksheepwools are good too, depending on what you want/need hope you're on the mend now :)

JollyJock · 12/11/2012 06:57

You could also ask around. When I was getting started my mum gave me some wool that she had lying around. Plenty for granny squares anyway. I also got some at a car boot sale for 50p a ball.

A question... I would like to crochet a hat (first ever piece of crocheted clothing) I have some Sirdar Big Softie Super Chunky and wondered a) would this work and b) where do I start?!! Sorry!!
There is also an extra 10% off at blacksheepwools for 24hours only!

PurplePidjin · 13/11/2012 07:19

I love Big Softie! Pick a slouch style and use a big hook.

All crochet starts with a chain

Ch4, join, 3ch+7tc in loop, join.

Ch3+tc in 1st st, 2tc in each st around (16sts)

Increase till you get a circle slightly bigger than the circumference of you head (8-10 rounds)

Work rows to get a good length including turn up (another 8-10??)

Finish off and weave in ends.

I can talk you through the increase formula if you like - so simple even i can understand it!

:)

SoupDragon · 13/11/2012 07:20

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Your first step is to decide what kind of hat you'd like.

Then spend hours looking on Ravelry.

There's a nice crochet hat on attic 24

attic24.typepad.com/

Jules146 · 13/11/2012 08:59

Thanks thank you for your help, I will try and see why I come up with!! Might be a mess but I can but try!! Is an increase where you do 1,1,2 in a round and then 1,1,1,2 ? Etc?!! Hmm

Row 2: 1ch, 1dc into next stitch (make bobble in next stitch, 1dc in next stitch, 1dc in next stitch) 8 times, make bottle in next stitch, 1dc into last stitch. The bit in brackets is worked over 3 stitches.

Jules, an increase is where you work 2 sts into the same place.

R1=1stitch:1stitch
R2=2sts:1st
R3=3sts:2sts (2 in first, one in 2nd st around)
R4=4:3
R5=5:4

Etc. It's why r1 is always an even number, normally 6 or 8. With 6 sts, the rows come up as

R1=6
R2=12
R3=18
R4=24
R5=30

Times tables :o

Jules146 · 14/11/2012 15:33

Thanks made my first ever hat last night! A mixture of attic 24 and others!! Now I am making DD one and wanted to add flower/leaf adornment and have found one but don't understand the bit in brackets can anyone help?!!
Chain 5 sl together

Rnd 1 - sc in 2nd chain from hk, hdc in next, dc in next, work (2hdc in last, ch 2, sc in second ch from hk, 2hdc) in last ch. Working now on the opposite side of foundation ch. dc in next, hdc in next, sc in last.

Hmm
Jules146 · 14/11/2012 15:35

This is where the original is!!

SoupDragon · 14/11/2012 15:36

I'll leave that one to Pidj as it seems contradictory as I understand it!
