Louper, why are you called louper? Is it because you loup? (Jump)

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 07/11/2012 23:06

Fellow crocheters..
I need your help..
I'm trying to make a Rudolph hat similar to this
www.etsy.com/listing/81634591/toddler-tan-rudolph-reindeer-crochet-hat?utm_campaign=Share&utm_medium=PageTools&utm_source=Pinterest
but im getting stuck on how to do the ears like that. In guessing its very simple Blush

Like how am I getting that shape with the sort of 'border' around it?
Thanks in advance Smile

SoupDragon · 08/11/2012 07:14

Something like...

  1. magic circle, 12 TC into circle, join to top of first TC
  2. 2TC in each stitch but at the top of an ear, use extended TC instead to give an elongated shape. Join
  3. change colour, DC all the way round.

Bear in mind I am crap at writing instructions and usually just wing it :o

PurplePidjin · 08/11/2012 07:37

Look up bear hats on ravelry :o and bear in mind a lot of the look of that hat will be in the photography!

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 08/11/2012 08:28

Thanks ladies. I looked all over raveley and google, but free reindeer hat patterns are hard to come by!!!
Ended up I've just bought one for a few £ on etsy. I'm just being particular and couldn't work out how to do it I'm known for just winging it to BlushGrin

SoupDragon · 08/11/2012 08:30

I'm meant to be writing a pattern for a bee square. Unfortunately it seems that "do a mix of stitches so you square off the rounded bits" is not acceptable and that's how I work!

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 08/11/2012 08:49

MummyDuck, i need to finish my reindeer hat too, but I'm making it up as i go along! Basic beanie, long ears of which I've done one, then try and make little antlers

Soupy, count how many sts round your circle is. Minus 4. Divide this number by 4. Work out even pattern of stitches of inc/dec heights.

Eg: circle = 36 sts

36-4=32

32/4=8

So each side will be tr, tr, htr, dc, dc, htr, tr, tr with tr clusters in the corners.

Crystal or mud?

SoupDragon · 08/11/2012 09:20

Or you just wing it. :o

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 08/11/2012 09:21

(actually, I do do the counting/dividing by 4/planning thing :))

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 08/11/2012 09:43

I do the arithmetic for other people, but wing it myself with the help of a pen and a handy scrap of paper

Cable Owl cardi now on my mn and ravelry profiles. I am totally, utterly, ridiculously chuffed with it Blush

Macarooned · 08/11/2012 19:41

Evening all, I love thus thread and wondered if I could bother you crochet gurus with a question...

I have just finished this butterfly garden square
for cupofteas blanket but it is a teeny but over 6" and the last row is the last row of the second lot of butterflies....so I'm wondering if it would be better to frog the second lot of butterflies and finish it in solid rounds??

Macarooned · 08/11/2012 19:43

Sorry for typos and garbledness I hope you understand my question
Thanks for bearing with me

PurplePidjin · 08/11/2012 22:43

How much of a smidge is it over? Would you get away with doing the last round of the butterflies on a 3.75 then finishing on a round of dc?

Macarooned · 09/11/2012 09:22

It's 6" and 1/8th...I might try your suggestion and see if that helps, otherwise I'll take it back to one round of butterflies.
Thanks pidg! Flowers
Next time I'll stick to simpler squares Blush I don't think I'm cut out for complicated ones! It just looks sooo pretty

Macarooned · 09/11/2012 09:23

Or Thanks even

PurpleFrog · 09/11/2012 09:26

Oh ... is 6" and 1/8th a problem? I thought that was with "acceptable limits". Looks like I will have to "adjust" my squares too....

Macarooned · 09/11/2012 09:40

Sorry to confuse you Purplefrog I think that that isn't a problem .... my problem is that I really need to put another round on my butterflies square otherwise it will have to be joined into the blanket by 16 three chain sections which could be flimsy/difficult.

PurpleFrog · 09/11/2012 09:54

Ah - I see - you mean it is already over 6" and you really need to do another round. Sorry, I misinterpreted!

Louper · 09/11/2012 10:30

Purplepidjin that owl cardi is gorgeous and incredibly clever. Macarooned the butterfly square is also very lovely and worth the aggro I think. I can only aspire to such clever crocheting! (Would have a go but my baby brain isn't up to it i've got to finish this granny blanket this lifetime!

nickelrocketgoBooooooom · 09/11/2012 11:13

yeah, i'd have used a smaller hook
then you can fit as many plain rounds as you want! Grin

Macarooned · 09/11/2012 12:44

It is lovely Louper! But I think I'll return to simpler patterns now Grin

So I just tried to do the last round of butterflies with smaller hook then a round of DC but it came out as 6.5" so I gave up and have done solid TC instead of the 2nd lot of butterflies, it looks lovely and is probably a better shape too ie more square and less wiggly/wrinkled!

Thanks for the help pidg anyway.

droitwichmummy · 09/11/2012 16:15

Hello lovely hookers! Can anyone help fairieswearpoppies? She needs a really cute hat for her DS.

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 09/11/2012 19:23

I have another had question for my fellow hookers WinkGrin

I'm wanting to make a chunky style crochet hat but using dk stylecraft yarn. If I use 2 strands at a time to 'double up' and use a bigger hook, what size would you recommend...? I want the stitches to be neat, with just a slight stretch Smile

PurplePidjin · 09/11/2012 19:34

Try it on a 6, if that's too tight go up to an 8 (sizes easily found in my local shops)

If you want it really stretchy, you need a square shape with a rib to it.

Ch x sts +1 to turn, where x is the distance from your eyebrows to the crown of your head +3" turn up.

Work 1 row dc

Work y rows in dc into the back loops only. Y is the circumference of your head + 1row.

Slip stitch up one side and across the top. Finish.

Turn right side out. Add pom poms or tassels to corners, or eyes and beak/nose+mouth for owl/animal...
