Ohh, lovely to see lots of new crocheters.

I love the owls and the cabling, very clever.

I've finished my spotty blanket here I started it in the Summer but had to abandon it. It was quite nice to be able to pick up a project that was nearly finished.

EdgarAllansPo · 04/11/2012 21:18

That's really beautiful, PantryBoy

Somersaults · 04/11/2012 21:19

I was just gng to say the same thing Ed.

Jules146 · 04/11/2012 23:13

Love the blanket Pantryboy! Superb! :)

SkaffenAmtiskaw · 05/11/2012 11:37

I love the owl mittens, I will have to try and make some for DD, who is owl-mad. I've just made this for her: owl phone-cosy, it was very quick to make.

I can't see the pictures of your spotty blanket, PantryBoy.

SoupDragon · 05/11/2012 11:45

Lovely blanket, PantryBoy :) I have all the yarn to make a spotty blanket - coloured with white background. I really need to finish everything else first though!

Loving the owl mittens :)

Oh it's lovely pantry boy :)
My join as you go is slowly killing me, I won't be doing another blanket for a while I don't think.
I went to the knitting and stitching show yesterday and managed to not buy any wool, dp was delighted! He hasn't seen the ribbons, buttons, bells etc that I did buy though
I think my next project will be some Christmas granny triangles for bunting. That way I can use my bells and possibly ribbon too!

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 05/11/2012 17:09

Pig! No yarn buying - I'm shocked.

I came home tonight to two parcels. DH assumed they were yarn and was quite shocked when they turned out to be something else.

He doesn't know I am planning to visit a yarn shop one night this week

Seabright · 05/11/2012 20:27

I am lurking on here 'cos I have got to a hard bit on the hat I am making for my daughter. "FPhtc around next 2 stitches" "FPhtc around same st as htc" "spike dc". Aggghhhh! I can't do it! I have frogged it 3 times.

Make me go and try again, instead of messing about on MN!

PurplePidjin · 05/11/2012 21:19

Fphtc = yarn over, round front, yarn over, back through, yarn over, through 3 loops on hook

Do this in the next 2 consecutive stitches

"fphtc around same st as htc" i assume means work one in the top two loops and one round the front of the same stitch? So you'll need to do some deft hook wiggling.

"spike dc" implies working a double crochet into the row below the one you're working on. There ought to be a description of this somewhere on the pattern

Have you got a link so i can have a look at the whole thing in context?

ThePigOfHappiness · 05/11/2012 21:26

Hi Seabright :)
FPhtc is a half treble around the frSont of the post, not into the top of the stitch, so yarn over, hook around the stitch from the front, yarn over, pull stitch through so 3 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Spike DC is DC in to the row under the intended stitch and drawing it up to the height of the top row.
Have you tried you tube for tutorials, using American terms?
Once you get the hang of it you'll be flying :)

ThePigOfHappiness · 05/11/2012 21:27

X post!

PurplePidjin · 05/11/2012 21:32

Haha, I'm used to being Chief Explainer, i shall panic less now there's someone else around to pitch in :o

Seabright · 05/11/2012 22:38

Ahhhhh! Done it ! Done it! And it looks (almost) like the picture! Can't link, I'm afraid, as it's from a mag, but if you have an iPad, it's the 3 coloured hat from the free, sample edition of Crochet Today which you can get through Newstand/Itunes.

Tomorrow, I am doing easy stuff. Flowers and butterflies. No new stitches for a day or two.

Somersaults · 05/11/2012 23:33

Ok, I've finished a bunch of squares and now I need to know how to join them. Can anyone talk me through an idiot's guide to joining pretty please? I've got ends to see in my squares tomorrow then I'll be join ready! I'm very excited. This is y first ever crochet project that is bigger than a single square :)

SoupDragon · 06/11/2012 07:05

I used Attic24 instructions when I joined my fist squares together.

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 06/11/2012 08:41

Place 2 squares wrong sides together

Stick hook through both corners, whichever are on your hook hand side

Draw up loop

Tie Pesky End to non-moving side of loop

Lay pesky end on top of work

Ch 1, dc in next available obvious place on both squares at the same time, dc along

When you get to the end, stick hook through both corners of the next pair of squares and continue.

Carry on like this until you've joined as many squares as you want the blanket to be long.

Do the same for one joined-on row and the next row of loose squares. Keep going until you get to the correct width. Then do exactly the same thing across-wise.

belindarose · 06/11/2012 15:27

Hello. Can I join your friendly thread please? Total and absolute beginner having problems with such a basic thing as the foundation chain. I've decided to try to get everything right before I move on!

Why is this happening? I crochet a chain of stitches. When I look at it closely, it's twisted or something part way through. The v's are sometimes on the front, then sometimes on the back. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

PurplePidjin · 06/11/2012 17:05

Nothing, just twist them back again! Unless you're joining a long chain to make a circle (eg for longies/trousers) it won't notice :)

you do know you're not allowed to leave, right?

belindarose · 06/11/2012 17:30

I'm not up to trousers yet!

But I don't want to leave. I chose hook over opportunity for sleep this afternoon (have small baby and sleep deprivation).

Okay, I'll try just twisting it back! Thanks.

PurplePidjin · 06/11/2012 18:07

:o You're a true hooker :o

JollyJack · 06/11/2012 18:20

Hallo lovely people.

Just checking in :)

Jules146 · 06/11/2012 21:15

I too often choose to hook over sleep! And have been known to get up in the middle of the night and tell dh that I have only been 10minutes when actually been an hour Although I am only a novice hooker!

belindarose · 06/11/2012 21:23

Well, I haven't yet worked out how to hook over the top of a sleeping baby (although I'm sure it's possible), so I may have to resort to secret night sessions too...

If he ever starts sleeping at night, that is.

If only he understood my dreams of the beautiful blankets I'd create for him, if he gave me the chance to learn how!
