Knitting beginner: where do I start?

I'm about to spend 6 weeks at home recuperating from surgery and in order to stop me doing anything else ie all the things I'm not supposed to be doing, I thought knitting would be a good thing to do (also I've wanted to take it up for ages but not had the chance, so negatives into positives etc).

But I haven't knitted anything since I was ten so I was hoping someone on here could suggest:
A) what starter kit do I need?
B) are there any good books to help me learn?
C) any good starter projects?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The knitty gritty book is awesome, it is for adults but my 9 year old was happy to follow it - so it is that good for a total begginer.

about projects, it is what you would like to do.... Nothing easy then a scarf, but if you don't need one it would be a drag to get it through....
anyone having babies in the family? Booties are quick!

Again, knitty gritty has ideas of easy projects and I bought very cheap with the book people!

Hope you enjoy it! I love knoitting!
