I would use some of this

Any reason why you wouldn't stuff in some cinnamon stick/cloves etc? The berries might be a bit sticky tho!

They sound like a lovely idea. I think you would be better using a fragrance oil that you can 'prep' the stuffing with. Although I am wondering if there is any way that you can make a small bag of sawdust or something very porus and put that right in the middle so that it will hold the smell better?

I'd say shop around for fragrance oils. I get a lot of mine here and they quite often do good offers.

I thought that too Geoff but couldn't see any cinnamon or cranberry scented oils anywhere....

tricot...they would make the decoration a weird shape.

Places like M&S and garden centres begin to stick cinnamon / Christmassy burner oils about now. A few drops onto the stuffing of your decs should do the trick. Also, if you rub a little of the oil on a lightbulb/back of a radiator, whenever either is switched on in the Winter it will gives off luvly smell.
