how do you tell if a crochet pattern is in American stitches?

I find that if there are no trebles mentioned, then the chances are it's in American...

Or if it mentions single crochet. Often it will say or I'll check where the pattern comes from (eg read other pages of the blog/site if that's where it came from)

If there is any other text in the pattern check for American spellings?

Look for any of the following:

sc (single crochet)
worsted weight yarn (we have dk and aran in the UK, worsted is in between)
Crochet hook size is sometimes a giveaway - US patterns often give the letter for the hook size
