I struck lucky at the weekend and bought 15 balls of alpaca 4 ply in a charity shop for £3 Grin and am now fancying making bed socks. Anyone have an easy pattern for someone who hasn't used double pointed needles before? Or have other tried and tested patterns that use 4 ply?

cheers all

Ooh lucky you! Alpaca is normally quite expensive. I have knitted bedsocks as a 'tube' before now, so no heel to turn etc, which doesn't matter when you do not have them in shoes. If you want to do this, you can just distribute the sts over three needles until you have enough, and revert to two needles for the toe. Just make it into a slope with stocking stitch, then stitch round the edges. Can't link to a pattern, but have alpaca envy! What colour did you get? It's not the most hardwaring of wool, in fact I am wearing my alpaca socks which have worn very thin, which I got from the alpaca farm in Cumbria.

PS. But it's so soft and lovely it doesn't matter!

Have a look at some of the KnitFreedom patterns - there are some great videos to help you master the basics.

How about these slippers or the straight up socks?

Btw this design was written for alpaca 4-ply.

some lovely patterns there, thank you both. Will start when the horrors are back at school as my thoughts are scrambled at the minute and the instuctions don't seem to go from eye to brain (if you know what I mean!)

Parsley- the colour has been left a natural cream colour which will go very well with the sheets I've just made from unbleached, double napped killington flannel- pure , snuggly soft bliss :)

I think you need to stop it now Pudden...where did you get your killington flannel from?

I had thirty metres of it Blush that I bought in a fabric buying co-op several years ago and bought another 15 metres from a fellow sewing fan that was selling her stash! I've made all sorts from it over the years... pyjamas, nappies, nighties, sheets, duvet covers and there is still a good bit left- must be breeding up there (in the loft- my domain)
