Where's the best place to sew a name tag onto a sock?

Just that really. I have about 1 billion to sew on (joy) but am trying to figure out where to put them on the sock. Sports sock get shuffled down, not folded over so I imagine on the top on the inside is best, where as a normal school sock would be folded over so then the top on the outside?? OR should they go on the sole (which I imagine will challenge my already limited sewing ability)

help please seamstresses

TBH, I can't be arsed to sew tags to socks. I have decided life is too short and I'd rather just buy more!

However, in the throws of keen PFB-off-to-secondary I did once sew them into the inside of the cuff. I will not be doing it again.

As an aside, I have sewn all mine in this year with the sewing machine. Far quicker, if a little fiddly.

I don't label socks. They're probably the only thing I don't label as they're such a bugger to do. So far we haven't had any problems with them disappearing.

Sorry, I know that's not very helpful!

Our sports socks (long hockey ones) have to be folded down at the top, so on the top outside is where we do them. Six quid a pair is a high price for not being bothered with them...

SoupDragon · 22/08/2012 14:40

DSs school rugby socks have to have inch high name tapes sewn visibly on the outside!

joshandjamie · 22/08/2012 16:09

the school insists they need to be labelled. My DH thinks I should just hand them all to a seamstress. But I dread the cost

Do it yourself I say, You could possibly sew it on the ankle so it's visible even if folded over.

joshandjamie · 22/08/2012 17:29

That's my point - are they meant to be visible or hidden?

What colour are they? I don't, as a rule, put name labels in socks, even if the school says that everything should be labelled because if one gets lost is rarely costs much. They have never checked afaik

However, I have, on occasion, just written DS's initials on the inside cuff of the sock in permanent marker. Of course you can't do that if you have black/navy/dark grey socks. There is nowhere really to sew them in a sock because they are stretchy and the name labels aren't

bronze · 22/08/2012 17:39

I give it all to my mil
Then if I need to do any extras I copy those she's done cos she's bloody perfect at these things

Socks we have inside vertically sewn at each end of the label with a little slack to allow for stretch

bronze · 22/08/2012 17:40

Oh and for rugby socks the same but further down allowing for the folded top

CokeFan · 22/08/2012 17:46

I put labels along the toe seams of my DD's ballet socks.

I've got white sports socks and grey school socks. I am starting to weep. May just bin the idea altogether...

I used to see name tags onto the top edge, but now I just use an iron-on label on the sole.

greenapples · 22/08/2012 18:48

When I was at school, socks were named under the arch of the foot - they weren't visible and didn't rub.

fossil97 · 22/08/2012 19:30

Iron on labels on the sole. I use sew-in labels for everything else because things have to be passed on but we are not that desperate for socks! Made about 100 little labels using a sheet of T shirt transfer inkjet paper.

Expensive/special socks like sports kit might get a label folded in half sewn at the top, I do similar with gloves

follambule · 16/04/2014 12:02

Use the white buttons of an old shirt. Put your kids initials on them with a CD marker so that it can go through the wash. saw the button on the side. Won't scratch and it takes no time at all.

Iron on transfers that flex with the sock are the only way.
