When DD was born, 7 yo DN 'made' her a 'dress'. Basically a biggish piecevof fabric with some big tacking stitches and a piece if ribbon stapled on. It was a very sweet gesture.

I'd like to use the fabric to make DD a skirt for her Naming in a few weeks. There is plenty of fabric. But - I am not a great sew -er at all. I am quite happy with hems, name tapes, buttons and swimming badges and can do fairly neat hand stitching. I don't have a sewing machine.

Could I use one of DD's pinafore dresses as a template, cut out two A line shapes, hem and seam and do an elastic waistband?

That would work - this tutorial will walk you through what to do, if you get stuck.
