(I want to know too!!)

I hope you make money JARM!

Yorkiegirl · 06/03/2006 07:05

I sell mine by commission. I have a website but it desperately needs updating. I won't post a link on here as its so awful atm! If you msn me later I'll show you.
A lot of my customers are repeats. They keep coming back for what they like Grin
Prices vary from card to card. start from £1.50 up

JayzMummy · 06/03/2006 08:42

Same as YG...I have a website and have repeat customers.
Also sell to two shops and have just secured an order from a local florists shop to make up the tags that go on the boquets....she wanted something a bit more unusual to the normal printed cards you get.
My sis sells loads in her dental surgery for me and I go to craft fairs and school fayres.
Prices start from £1.50 upwards.

Learnt a valuable lesson over christmas and stocked up on other items to attract people to my stall and it worked.

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 09:36

I was just about to start a thread regarding this!!

I have been making my own cards for about 7 years now - just cos I enjoy it and also to save money on buying cards. Friends have said I should sell them but I haven't been brave enough to!!

SO: How do you go about selling cards? Who do you sell them to? and ...... how do you know if they are good enough? Blush

jenk1 · 06/03/2006 09:47

i used to sell cards, i sold a lot this year but since xmas i havent made any, ive lost my confidence and keep thinking that they are rubbish Sad

But, im going to start off scrapbooking and see if that helps, but i just used to casually mention to freinds and family that i was making cards and i used to have a box full.
Someone suggested to me that i have a card party once-thats a way of letting people know as well.

jenk1 · 06/03/2006 09:47

Whoops, that should say i sold a lot last year Blush

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 09:48

Do you sell them just as they are with envelopes or do you go the full hogg and get them sellophane (sp?!) wrapped?

JayzMummy · 06/03/2006 10:27

cellophaned wrapped looks nicer and keeps them clean so you can make batches up of the same card and store them.
HTH

Card parties are a really good idea. Dior has held a few and alweays reports back that they were sucessful.
Invite friends round for a girlie night and put your cards on dispaly.....Im sure they would buy from you.

PeachyClair · 06/03/2006 10:30

TBh I'm usually so grateful that someone wanted one of myc ards that I get all humble and charge 50p Blush

Useless!!!!!!!

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 10:45

how do you cellophane wrap them? Where do you buy it from and how much does it cost?

buffythenappyslayer · 06/03/2006 10:48

i make cards and sell them on ebay for cystic fibrosis trust.i also asked our village post office if i could put a box of them in there.it seemed an obvious place as they get loads of people in there every day.i sell mine for £1 each.when i first started i charged £2.00,but alot of people dont want to pay alot.

jenk1 · 06/03/2006 10:52

poppies you can buy cellophane card pockets from places like Lakeland, ebay or most craft websites

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 11:10

PeachyClair · 06/03/2006 11:28

musthavechocolate · 06/03/2006 13:25

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your useful info. I'm a new member to mumsnet - this is my first message!Smile Been making cards for a few months now, really enjoying it, keen to try and sell but lacking confidence like a few of you! Had a look at that website, thanks. It looks good - think I'll buy some of those card bags and go for it!

PeachyClair · 06/03/2006 13:55

musthavechocolate, post a message for auntyquated or jayzmummy and see if you can get access to the gallery- maybe if you can post a few cards we can give you some feedback?

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 13:55

Thanks so much - very helpful.

So tell me - how did you start to sell your cards. Tell me your story...

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 15:45

bump

poppiesinaline · 06/03/2006 18:21

anyone!!!? Someone please give me some tips on how to get started!!

Whizzz · 06/03/2006 18:26

I blame MN for my card addiction. It's something I had in mind for a while ever since a Hobbycraft opened in town ! I also now make beaded jewellery too.
I've only done 2 craft fairs so far but also sell a few cards through work - although I dont promote myself as much as I could I suppose.
Sell mine in cellophane packets - cost £1.50 - £2.50 basically depending on how long each takes to make & what its made from.

Dior · 07/03/2006 13:45

I buy my cellophane envelopes from Ideal.co.uk. They work out at 4p per bag, but then I bought 1000! It is the cheapest I have ever found the bags anywhere.

I do indeed do card parties, usually when dh is away snowboarding. It is a good excuse for a girls' night, with the added bonus of earning some money. I also have my cards in three shops. All I did was package them in the cellophane bags and print off little stickers with my details on, for the back of the card, and for a price label. They sell slowly but surely, although I will never be rich from doing it! I think of it as a hobby that pays for itself!

My cards are generally £1.75, although some are £2.00 if they have taken me a long time, or have lots of fiddly bits and bobs on. I charge £4 for large cards (A5), because the card blank and envelope is 60p before I have even made the card.

The main thing is to have fun doing it.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 07/03/2006 18:39

Dior - I was gonna chat with you actually.... Ive got a feeling you are underselling your cards.... They are so fantastic, I just think you could get more?!

Tell me to piss off if you want, but ill raise it again with you tomorrow!!

OP posts:
Dior · 07/03/2006 18:47

Piss off then Grin Wink

Not sure myself...don't want toi scare people off. Shops sell them for anything upwards of £1.99, the most being £3.00, but I can't charge my friends £3.00 Shock

IvortheEngine · 07/03/2006 19:29

Can I butt in here to ask someone to post a link to the gallery, please? I think the passwords are mumsnetter and netters. Am I right, please? I love to have a look around the gallery now and then. Thanks. Smile
