Homemade playdough - recipe mixing flour with wet paint BEFORE water added?

I'm hoping someone will know what I'm talking about here! We went to a Creation Station workshop AGES ago, which is why I don't remember the recipe, but I'm sure we mixed 1 cup of flour, 1 cup of salt and then mixed in a big squirt of wet paint to make a dry, crumbly mixture BEFORE water was added to make it into playdough. Has anyone else made playdough this way - is that about right for the recipe? I thought it was a really good way to make coloured playdough as it meant we didn't get as messy as when trying to mix wet paint into pliable dough...

Oh - to explain a bit more, the reason I don't want it to be too messy is that at the workshop I did, the kids were doing the mixing, not the adults! So there was a tarp to work on, the flour and salt were poured onto that and mixed together, the squirt of paint was added, then the water.

If no-one gets back to me I'll just give it a go tomorrow and hope it doesn't migrate onto the carpet... ulp.
