Should bobbin case always click when inserting thread?

Still trying to work out what's wrong with mine, watched some youtube tutorials, and when they put bobbin into case and pull thread round, it snaps, does everybody's do this?
Mine has never done this.....!

Sounds like maybe your bobbin tension is wrong. The bobbin case has a screw on the side to adjust tension, try turning it a quarter of a turn anticlockwise, you will need a small screw driver or something similar I used a sharp knife

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 13:07

i've done this and nothing, is it supposed to click then?
machine was bought last week.....!

Well mine doesn't snap, only when I put the plastic cover on. Turn the screw back clockwise a quarter of a turn to where it was then. Can you check the instruction manual? Failing that, give the shop a call on Monday (or the manufacturer even).

god, what a saga, have been emailing janome about this, of course they keep telling me i'm not threading it properly....I think the timing and/or tension is off, whilst sewing I can see the top thread go round and across the bobbin case,is this normal????
I got it from John Lewis last week

I have uploaded 3 pics on to my profile......

Ah. Yes, you should be able to see the thread go over the top of the bobbin case when you sew. That top picture of yours looks like the thread is outside the black bobbin case. It shouldn't be, it should be through the silver bit next to the bobbin. Hard to explain, when you put the bobbin in, take the end thread and pull it through the silver part clockwise until it catches. then put on plastic cover. Take hold of thread which is through the needle, slide it between the foot and behind the foot. Click the foot down. Still holding onto the top thread, Make the needle go down then up. Lift the foot. Then pull gently on the thread and the bobbin thread will come up through the hole. Is this too basic? Am I being thick and not understanding you?

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 14:41

If that top thread (top picture) on the outside black bit is the top 'needle' thread then it's right.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:20

yes, the top thread is always on the outer side of the bobbin case, on the outside of the plastic bit, but it seems to go round, not catch the bottom thread, then go round again, and then catch it, but by this point, you have an extra bit of top thread, do you know what I mean?
and this is all after threading bottom thread through correctly, as you described.
so, in the top picture when I pull the fabric instead of there being 1 top thread and 1 bottom thread, the bottom thread feels tight and there are about 3 top threads.....

in the 2nd photo the thread on the left is the bobbin thread, the one on the right is the top thread going round the outside of the bobbin case (black plastic)

Hang on, I'm just going to get my machine out and see how many times it goes round...

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:30

The top thread only goes round the bobbin once, not twice.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:31

well mine goes round all the time when sewing!!!!

OP posts:
TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:32

The second photo looks right, that's how the top thread goes round the bobbin. Have you got an up/down arrow on your machine somewhere? It allows the needle to go in and stop, then when you press it again the needle goes back up, so basically each time you press the button the needle does half a stitch.

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:33

Yes, it should go round all the time, once for every stitch, so it can go really fast when the machine is on full steam.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:36

the top photo is after sewing, you can see how there are about 3 threads coming out of the bottom, not just 1 -

does it matter what position the metal casing is in before you put the plastic bobbin case in? or does it need to match up somehow?

OP posts:
TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:38

So after sewing there is a top thread lying across the bobbin as in your top pic? That's not right. Okay, next thing to try is to remove the big metal piece over the bobbin and under the needle. You will need a screw driver for this. Then remove the black plastic bobbin holder and see if there is a material/thread jam underneath or inside.

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:40

mine doesn't snap or click!

it must just be the tutorial - they probably set it in with an extra click to show that it's connected.

can you link to one of the videos?

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:41

today done all that, nothing there, have done it about 10 times..... :(

OP posts:
nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:42

if you've got 3 threads coming out, you've threaded something wrongly.

  • you need to check that you've not got too much thread on your bobbin.
you need to check that the needle is straight and inserted properly. you need to check that you have definitely connected your bobbin to the case properly - is the thread clockwise or anti-clockwise?
TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:43

Oh dear.

One last thing, what make is your machine?

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:44

Nickle, have a quick look at her profile pics...

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:44

okay -have you got a video camera?
or a camera on your mobile?

film yourself doing what you have been doing. (the machine, not your face Wink)

then post it on youtube and link it.

then we'll be able to see what's happening.
(you might also want to send that video to janome to ask them!)

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:45

i've looked - it doesn't look any clearer to me what the problem is! Blush

(i can't do visualization on stills - i'd need to be there, or see a video Blush)

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 15:45

Oh duh! Mine's a janome too. Um....

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:46

instruction manual says bobbin case should be threaded anti clockwise, but, to see if I was going mad I have tried it clock wise too, and it does the same thing

it's a Janome 7025 from John Lewis
