Should bobbin case always click when inserting thread?

Still trying to work out what's wrong with mine, watched some youtube tutorials, and when they put bobbin into case and pull thread round, it snaps, does everybody's do this?
Mine has never done this.....!

Very stupid question that you probably tried first...turn it off and on again.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:48

hahaha yes, been doing this for 3 days now: trying, turning off, leaving it, coming back to it....

it sometimes is fine, but 2 out of 3 times it tangles, have also tried with different bobbins, different threads, different needles, and different fabrics

it should go round the steely-looking bobbin holder, but not around the grey bit.

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:49

tried it with different bobbins?
the bobbins that came with it, right?

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:50

re-set your needle too.
re-thread it.

usually if something goes wrong underneath,it's something you've done uptop.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:51

the photos are back to fron chronologically:
bottom pic is beginning: all threaded looking fine
middle pic is whilst sewing: left thread is bobbin thread, right thread is top thread going round bobbin case anti clockwise
top pic is end: top thread is on outside of bobbin case, and on the fabric there is 1 bobbin thread but 3 top threads, 2 of which are coming from the bobbin area

is your bobbin holder (the steely metal bit) fastened in correctly?

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:52

have only used the 3 bobbins that came with the machine, as well as the needles

OP posts:
nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:53

in your photo, has the needle done its full round?
it goes down then up then down then up before it's finished.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:54

nickel: think so, when you insert bobbin case into machine it doesnt really move much, bobbin case is black plastic with metal tension rods inside that you put bobbin into. have also tried adjusting bobbin base tension rod, also made no difference,

am convinced it's either not going round properly, maybe out of synch with needle, or it's a dodgy bobbin case....maybe I should ask them to send me another bobbin case?

OP posts:
MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 15:55

nickel yes, middle and top photos are taken during and after sewing a few stitches

OP posts:
nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 15:58

if it's out of sync with the needle, take the needle out and put it in again.
the flat side of the needle must be very flat against the shaft.

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 16:01

this might be worrying, though

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 16:03

I saw that Nickel, but it didn't give a satisfactory answer so I didn't post it. I seem to be no use to Foodie at all...

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 16:05

me neither. :(

nickelbarapasaurus · 30/06/2012 16:05

is your foot down when you're sewing?
it's up in all of your photos

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 16:06

I bet she's gone off to the link I posted earlier, I hope they can help.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 16:06

I saw that, have been researching this for days now...!
what machines have you lot got?
maybe I should exchange it for the elna, which is what I was going to get in the 1st place......

OP posts:
TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 16:07

Do you know, that's a point! It does look like it's up!

Foodie, put the foot down!!!

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 16:07

it's up in the top and bottom pics as they are before and after sewing, it's down in the middle one when the thread is going round

I have a Janome Memory Craft 4900, the one designed for quilters.

MissFoodie · 30/06/2012 16:09

hhmmm am not into quilting myself, but it's a janome and you've not had any problems? has it got same bobbin case as mine?

OP posts:
TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 16:10

It looks identical

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 16:11

I think your feed dogs are slightly different, but that won't make any difference.
