Whatever you do, steer clear of the crap they sell in Hobbycraft!

I've used this - Warm and White - on a double quilt and love it.

I have used bamboo for my son's and it is very light and warm

For my daughter I have used dream orient and it is soooo soft and welll silky.... I will use that for mine.

I've always used Hobbs batting in 100% cotton, and 2nd that cottonpatch would be the place to buy.

thanks for this, how thick is it? I want something that's at least an inch rather than the really thin one for making thin patchwork quilts,

If you're wanting something which is an inch thick you should look at synthetic battings. Remember that if you are machine quilting, you need to be able to feed everything through the machine. Cotton battings are thin but dense, the synthetic ones have a high loft (thickness) and are 'porous' therefore they can be pushed through a machine and bounce back afterwards. If you google high loft battings you should find info on them and how to tackle the quilting of them.
