Help with patterns for novice sewer

Hi, am new to this section. Have just got a basic sewing machine and have been having fun running up bags, cushions and bits and pieces.

Am getting a bad fabric habit and found a gorgeous remnant of chiffony type material (polyester I think) and would like to turn my hand to making clothes. I have in mind a simple tunic top for my 10yo DD (probably to wear over a camisole top) but have been baffled by looking at patterns online and have been unable to find anything suitable and very, very easy!

Can anyone out there point me in the right direction? I'm itching to get started.

I'd go to a decent fabric shop and look at their pattern books, hopefully someone there would be able to give you advise too.

If you can't find a fabric shop that sells patterns ebay is fab for them if you find a pattern you like you can search for it on there for cheap.

Simplicity (like it's name implies) makes easy patterns. You can buy directly from their website and they aren't too expensive

It's so easy and sew simple are meant to be their easiest.

As for fabrics, shiny/ chiffony fabrics are usually a little harder to start with as the slip and move, pin everything well and you should be okay :)

I cheated with my first clothes sewing here as I made it up as I went along, using an existing shift dress (for my DD) that I knew fitted, and worked backward from there.
Has your DD got anything similar to what you have in mind that you could use?
