How much fabric, roughly, for 12-18 month dress?

Am daydreaming and planning to sew a dress for dd2, who will be one by the time I get around to it! I am costing it and have some idea how much I'll pay per metre of fabric, but no idea how many metres I'd need. If I made one for dd1 too, 7-8 size, do you have a rough idea how much fabric that would take? Thanks for advice-might even get past daydream stage!

well it depends on the pattern...a simple shift needs only a metre but a more gathered dress would possibly need more...you need a pattern or an idea of the style you want.

That's a good start, thanks Smile. Gives a baseline figure. Think I'll get a pattern for a little shift dress-I guess it would be simpler and also less expensive. Then if I get the bug might try a different style. It was the post on yarn that linked to a gorgeous elephant print dress that inspired me!

OK, for the one year old just under a metre...

I made the elephant dress and used a metre for the dress and pants... I misposted, obviously due to the shock of my yarn horror :)

I'm glad you did latte lady! The dress is gorgeous and the source of my inspiration! Can I ask where the elephant print is from? Lovely!
