Lightweight 'stuff' to make a 'textured' 3D-ish wall hung painting.

Any suggestions?

I am inspired to do a huge painting, probably on a large 40x30" (cheap) canvas using acrylic paint, but any idea what sort of 'texture medium' I can use that will allow me to do some serious 3D (I am thinking 1 to 1.5" raised bits, maybe like tree-trunks) on it? Will need to be lightweight. I would probably construct the picture then over paint it so I won't need gallons of acrylic paint.

I was sort of thinking maybe stiffened fabric? Cardboard? Papier mache (but how long would that take?!) I'd consider polystyrene but it'd be hard to get paint to stick to that, wouldn't it? Also I'd like some smooth curves which'd be hard to do with that.

Any ideas welcome.

Hi, I was going to have a go at this from the Hobbycraft site.

Maybe you could get more ideas from it:
