Sticking oilcloth to a surface.

Hi, I am trying to stick oilcloth as a top surface to a very old cabinet.
I have tried spray glue, but it will not stay.
Can anyone help please?

Have you sanded the surface to make it rough? What is the cabinet made of?

if the cabinet is varnished i think you'll have to remove that then use perhaps PVA/wood glue?

Could you wrap it over the edge and staple gun it in place. Obviously this will only work if you can't where the staples are going to be.
