50's style girls dress

I'd like to make the DD's a fifties style dress each (they are 4 & 1) to wear to a Jubilee Party this summer.

Anyone know of where I could get any info on what little girls in the 50's wore in the summer, or even better a tutorial or pattern for a wee dress.

Tounge in cheek/modern twist to the fifties is fine.

Try the library. If you can't find anything in arts and crafts, get a history book about childhood or the 1950s.

Hi,

I teach History of Fashion. This might help www.fashion-era.com/1950s_glamour.htm#Whitsunday_Best_Clothes_in_the_UK_in_the_Mid_1950s. V and A website might be helpful, but havent't checked it. However from the bit I know, I would say.

Fitted bodice, maybe with smocking. Peter pan collar, or plain round neck. Puffed sleevs. Full skirt. Sash to tie at the back. Probably gingham, broiderie anglais, dots or floral print (unless you can find some wild Festival of Britain type fabric!)

bargain Don't think you could make it for that price!

You could probably get away with...

this simplicity pattern -

it covers both sizes too - maybe the bottom view & mix red white & blue fabrics

or Noddies link above & change the buttons to red white & blue, with UJ or red white & blue ribbons in their hair :)

This is a great website that sells vintage dress patterns -

ah ladies you rock - now I have so much to think about!!

I love noddy's ready made and it is a bargain. Pity the gingham one is out of stock in DD1'a size.

Also like the idea of the pinnie style.

I made this one but above the knee for dd's 40's school production. Great pattern with lots of variations.
