Knitters - do any of you make money from knitting?

Eg do you knit for sale and if so where, what and do you make a profit?

Just curious.

Friend of mine makes and displays her wares on facebook. So far I've bought four items so she's doing well from me. Grin

I make hats for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes (not for money though!) and a few people have suggested I sell them. There's a craft fair near me shortly which I was thinking of buying a stall at but I'm not sure how much people would be willing to pay for a hat, especially in summer. It takes me about 2 days to make a hat, then maybe another night to make and add embellishments.

Does anyone have any ideas of price??

I've sold a few blankets on ebay in the past and whilst they always sell easily they never go for very much - usually about £15.00 which barely covers the wool!

I think it would be hard to make a profit, unless you are very speedy at making and find some way to sell for high prices, emphasis on the handmade/top quality aspect. There are some interesting discussions on ravelry about this on their forums.

I have made a couple of hats on request for the price of the yarn, was able to get the yarn on offer so made a tiny profit by accident but I probably 'earned' about 50p per hour! I think you could recoup your costs if you just wanted to knit for pleasure and basically get your yarn paid for though Grin

Thank you. I was curious because I keep getting positive coments on the knits I make for my DD and myself. I've noticed on Etsy that some of the knitters with high sales tend to specialise in one or two items eg a certain kind of scarf that look very quick to knit and they charge a low-price-to-consumer eg £20 for a bow-tie scarf.

Very interesting.
