Would you be so kind as to show me please?

How long have you had it, and what's its story?

here's mine
it's a 1960s (1969, i think) Jones.
it belonged to my mum,she got it for her 21st birthday.
She passed it to me when she got fed up with sewing (in 1999, so I was 23)
It's got a replacement pedal, but i don't think anything else has been replaced (apart from bits and bobs).
i think the tension is knackered, but that might be from moving it around too much.
She used to use it on an old wooden ironing board, which now belongs to me (but i don't sew on it)

Can't show you at the moment because I took it to be serviced last week and haven't got it back yet. However, it is a Riccar and I had it for my 21st birthday from my DGrandpapa and I use it quite a bit. I'm horrified to realise that it's 21 this year!

PigeonPie · 20/04/2012 17:18

Yours looks beautiful Nickel

nickelhasababy · 20/04/2012 17:19

Mine is a fristar and rossman bought by my mum for my 13th birthday - she died nearly 20 years ago and my sewing machine is very special to me.... Will try and upload pictures later.

PigeonPie · 20/04/2012 17:35

Riccar were the baby Bernina; sadly they are no longer made.

Molehillmountain · 20/04/2012 21:00

Ah, sorry no picture but mine is a 1972 Bernina that my dad gave mum as wedding present. It's been mine since mum upgraded for a modern machine-in 1985!

VickityBoo · 20/04/2012 21:06

Mine is a lovely Juki that was my 30th birthday present. I hope to have many happy years with it. Grin

LatteLady · 20/04/2012 21:52

I blogged about one of my machines... it is a Singer Hand Machine and I love it dearly and still use it regularly :)

ToryLovell · 20/04/2012 22:09

LatteLady I learnt to sew on one of those when I was about 10, it belonged to my grandmother, who gave it to my Mum, who didn't really use it so I got given it.

Didn't really appreciate it at the time and it got given away when I got a brand new Singer for my 18th.

Sadly my machine has died a death this week making a dress, so I am now on the hunt for a new cheap one

Jellykat · 20/04/2012 22:17

Mine is a Jones too, i was looking after it for a friend 26 years ago who was moving after he was thrown out of our Art college (his heart wasn't in it)..
I'm still looking after it, service it myself, and love it dearly.. I use it virtually everyday and it has a permanent place on my large kitchen table Smile

LatteLady Yours is THE classic beautiful machine!

ToryLovell Are you sure yours is dead - Have you had a second opinion?

SoupDragon · 21/04/2012 07:13

Mine is a very dull, cheap Singer from 1997 or thereabouts. It needs a service but I can't decide whether to simply buy a new one as an upgrade.

I would like to pretend it looks like this which I found on John Lewis yesterday.

AGunInMyPetticoat · 21/04/2012 07:19

The picture isn't of mine, but it's exactly the same model as [http://www.ebay.com/itm/BERNINA-Record-830-Sewing-Machine-A-Treasured-Workhorse-for-Any-Type-of-Sewing/350558691521 this].

Vintage Bernina. I sold my computerised Brother because it just didn't compare to this one!

nickelhasababy · 21/04/2012 13:50

LatteLady - my mum had one of those!
In a very plain wooden box.

when I was younger, she wouldn't let me use the Jones, but would let me use the singer Hmm
(ie, the one that was older and more valuable, but because it was a hand machine, she thought I couldn't damage it Grin )

nickelhasababy · 21/04/2012 13:51

Tory - i bet you could get it brought back to life :)

Soupy - that Singer is to die for!
the classic lines and colour! and the up-to-the-minute technology!

Grin

in the meantime: have a picture of a baby dragon, homemade by my Jones

I have a computerized bernina that I saved up for and bought when I was 15. It cost a feckin fortune but it was worth it. It made my prom dress for my 6th year leavers do and my wedding dress too! Currently working on baby clothes :)

NorbertDentressangle · 21/04/2012 14:00

Is this some sort of sewing machine porn thread that I've stumbled upon? Smile

I've not got a photo of mine but its an old Singer one (poss 1970s judging by the fantastic design on the front of the instruction booklet!) and is a light turquoise colour, in fact probably the same shade as the lighter colour on yours nickelhasababy.

My mum bought it secondhand for me about 15-20 years ago.

nickelhasababy · 21/04/2012 14:09
Grin no, I was just interested to see what everyone else uses - In my own mind, mine is the best machine in the world, and I'd hate to have to use anything else (except perhaps a modern industrial machine)

that light turquoise is very 70s, isn't it!

I joined a sewing class about 3 years ago to find out if it was me or the Toyota sewing machine that I'd been left by an Aunt that was at fault.

By Christmas, I had "New Sewing Machine" at the top of my list, and I've now got a pretty basic (but computerised) Brother.

I love it! ... Just wish I had more time to use it :(

(BTW, where do you go online to find other sewers? I occasionally go to the Sewing Forum, and I lurk around Pinterest. Are there any more? Sorry Nickel to divert your OP )

Moomoomie · 21/04/2012 15:04

Aww nickel. The dragon outfit is gorgeous, as is the baby wearing it.

nickelhasababy · 21/04/2012 15:09

(that's okay blue! :) )

thanks for the compliments on the dragon!
I made her too (as well as her costume!) Grin
