Odd things about Pinterest - anyone else experiencing this?

Have had my pinterest account for a while now. Recently I've had a lot of repins from people who, when I check out their boards, have LOADS of boards with just 1 pin on them. They just seem a bit odd - very random board titles covering a huge array of subject matter - they just don't seem "real". The photos of the "person" look a bit fake too. Anyone else had this?

Also, I have had 2 family members repin stuff from my board or start following me. The strange thing is that I am on Pinterest under a pseudonym that none of these people know. They are not close relatives and I haven't spoken to them about being on Pinterest. They are on my Facebook though and I am wondering whether there are any strange shenanigans going on via this connection. I never post stuff on my Facebook page, certainly don't link to Pinterest, so am a bit baffled. Is Pinterest so small that they could genuinely have stumbled across some of my pins? I haven't mentioned it to them yet because I would rather have my anonymity on there. I'm not particularly prolific and did my main pinning in the run up to Xmas - I've about 700 pins so not a huge amount.

I think there is a facebook link - i've had 'friends' suggested to me to start following, that I only know very vaguely.

I am very pissed off about this if this is the case. I don't remember anything about giving Pinterest access and permission to contact anyone on my Facebook account. I certainly haven't consciously clicked anything to say this. I can't even remember how I joined - did I have to give my Facebook details then? Maybe I should have paid more attention! My Facebook is obviously under my real name but my Pinterest is under a pseudonym - the email address I am registered under at Pinterest is different from the one I used to register with Facebook. I will of course, just ask my relatives if I can't get to the bottom of it but I would rather not if I can help it.

Yes i think you can only join via facebook or email I think? You must have, I think, otherwise how would pinterest know what your facebook account was?

Recently, Pinterest suggested me two of my Facebook friends. My name of Pinterest is different to that one which is on Facebook and it means if they use Pinterest I would be suggested too. I checked my account and changed my email address. I am not linked to Facebook but I have created pinterest account via Facebook account, so I can imagine they are still linked somehow. I have not used Pinterest for sometime though.

I find this totally confusing. Should have known better than to involve myself in something that had a Facebook connection. abc123d When you say that "Pinterest suggested me two of my Facebook friends" how did that happen exactly. Did you get an email from Pinterest, or did something appear on your Facebook page or on your actual Pinterest page when you logged in? I haven't had anything like that at all.

If a Facebook friend joins pinterest it will show up when I log in and ask if I want to follow them

DonkeyTeapot · 19/04/2012 20:18

You can join pinterest without linking facebook (I did), but it seems they really do push you to link. I haven't really been using pinterest lately, since the thread about their terms and conditions. I believe they have now changed their T&C, but now if I see something I want to make, I save the image to my computer instead of pinning it. I am suspicious that everything seems to have to be linked to facebook these days, I think it's too easy to lose track of what data appears where on the internet.

abc123d · 19/04/2012 21:23

cartblanche the suggestions appeared when I had logged in. I am fine with my pins but still it is a little bit uncomfortable to know that we are constantly watched.

sooperdooper · 20/04/2012 20:41

If you go into your pintrest settings you can set it not to link into facebook - but I maybe even if it's not linked to your fb friends, if someone you are friends with on fb searches their connections on pintrest you will still come up?

I hate how everything tries to link to fecking Facebook.

rockinhippy · 25/04/2012 22:40

Theres definitely a FB link - it P's me off too - my Pinterest signs in with FB - ie if I'm signed in with FB, I don't have to sign in with P - & if I pin anything new, theres a FB tick box bottom right of the Pinterest Pin it box - IYSWIM - you have to UNtick it, or the photo also shows up on your FB wall - caught me out a few timesHmm

& can't say I've seen the weird 1 photo, per board profiles, but I've not really looked, but I have noticed there seems to be some sort of scam going on there - I've had comments left by someone who pinned 1 photo of mine, didn't make any sense, so followed it back to the profile & it looked od - 2 boards, both with 1 photo - clicking the photo redirected to some shopping site - wasn't viagra, but of that ilk - though I can't remember exactly what

Liking the blank FB idea - mind you, I don't really care that much now - its funny seeing what a few friends are now pinning after following my photos & joining Pinterest - people I know well have surprised me :)

rockinhippy · 25/04/2012 22:41

I'm more p'd that FB is now linked to Trip Advisor - can't even have a rant about a shite hotel in peace anymoreHmm

SoupDragon · 26/04/2012 07:16

Simply go to your Pinterest settings and turn off the link to Facebook option.
