How on earth do you knit with 'eyelash' wool?!!

I'm trying to knit hair for a doll for my son, and he won't let me put a hat on so I need to make it look more 'hair' like than just using DK.

I asked for advice on here a while ago and was advised to use eyelash wool which looked perfect but I tried to cast on last night and it was horrendous! It just tangles and knots and I just can't work out how to knit with it Blush.

Any tips?

What size needles are you using? I don't think it helps if you use smaller ones, say 3 or 4mm. I would use 5 or 6mm if you can.

If you are already using biggish needles then I am a bit stumped.

I'm using 4mm, but if I used larger needles wouldn't the finished piece be too big for the doll? Confused

Are you using the long tail cast on method ? I find the wool less likely to tangle if I use it. Can't link but google it it's on YouTube .

Thanks Trumpton, not sure I know what that means so will look it up! Smile

- eyelash wool sounds awful, though. Can the doll be bald?

I can't knit with that stuff, only crochet. Could you crochet a little skull cap as hair with it?

BigBoobiedBertha · 16/04/2012 11:33

You could use bigger needles but with fewer stitches unless you are picking up stitches but even then you could fiddle it somehow.

What sort of eyelash yarn is it?

I used the Sirdar one to knit a fox's tail for DS2 and had no trouble with it. I used 5mm needles I think.

It could also be the way it is wound so if you are taking the yarn from the centre of the ball could you try taking it from the outside end instead or vice versa?

Grin at a bald doll - DS1 would never stand for that Grin!

I can't crochet unfortunately MM, it's one of my goals for this year to learn.

Thank you for the tips BBB, I have now managed to cast on and used the yarn differently and it seems to be working. It still is a pain to work with but the finished effect will hopefully be worth it!
