Am i being overambitious?

I'm thinking of cutting up my wedding dress to make into a christening gown for DD's christening. I have a simple looking pattern, sharp sissors and access to a machine but have never done anything like this before and have not used a sewing machine since i was a teenager. My Mum thinks I'm nuts and that it'll be a waste of an expensive dress. I figure it's just sat there doing nothing whilst i can't bear to sell it i would like to use it for something but I'm now doubting myself....

Why don't you make a prototype first, using the same pattern and some cheapy fabric? - Then you'll have a better idea, as to whether cutting up your wedding dress would go well or not.. Happy Sewing Smile

I don't know about over ambitious, but I want to do similar-make my two dds dresses out of the enormous skirt before they're too old to play matching dresses! It's a great idea. Smile

Good idea Jellykat.

Was it not the done thing years (and possibly years) ago to make the christening dress out of the wedding dress.

It would be a lovely heirloom if you did it and it came out lovely.

Thanks all - I will give the prototype a go first!
