Could I convert this prom dress into a ballroom dancing dress?

I'm a bit broke all the time atm
So I bought this prom dress from eBay ages ago; do you think I could convert it into a ballroom dance dress?

I was thinking
black opera gloves
a back tie for the corset back
Shorten it and use a net petticoat

But would you emphasise the beading with some black beads to make it stand out?
Is there anything else I could do?

Of course! Black net, tie, gloves and a few beads would be lovely. Would the material move well enough?

It's for ballroom so I am hoping with a good enough (or with enough - we might need several) underskirts it would swirl well; it's quite a heavy 'satin' I guess (but I'm not very technical - so that might not be the right name - it's shiny on one side)

I wonder if it would be better to glue black beads or sew them on; or maybe even embroider the lines

Or maybe appliqué larger black flowers round the crystal ones?

I (unfortunately) would go with sewing, I have no experience with ballroom costumes but anything I have glued on comes off.

Beads would be lovely.

Oh I've done quite well with sticking crystals on ballroom & latin

I've been thinking - can you get silver embossing liquid/gel? If so I could draw great big flowers around the existing flowers and paint (using fabric paint) sort of Japanese type poppies in black - using the existing silver flowers as the centre

You can get silver fabric pens? Same kind of thing?

KatyMac · 10/03/2012 18:08

Maybe? I was thinking of something quite raised

KatyMac · 24/03/2012 21:30

Thanks lazymonkeyface I don't think you would expect the results from the first photos would you?

lazymonkeyface · 25/03/2012 15:58

I certainly wouldn't! It looks so different!

KatyMac · 25/03/2012 16:12

I know I helped do it (DD's dancing partners mum helped too - she sews better than me Wink); but I really think the difference is amazing

A bit of ribbon, a bit of cloth & it's a different dress

Design is amazing; my friend is a dress designer & is absolutely fabulous at these things

That's pretty impressive!

KatyMac · 25/03/2012 17:58

I just hope it's visible enough on the dance floor (fingers crossed)

I am sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see if I can sell her juvenile dresses on eBay to pay for this one
