Making a short skirt for a latin costume.....help!!!!! (Please I beg you.....)

I made DD a lovely leotard last year with a ballroom skirt

She now wants a latin skirt - but not the pattern I know how to make; oh no she wants a new pattern

So I want a slim fit tight short skirt with horizontal pleats across the front....has anyone any idea what DD is talking about?

Or I could buy this pattern

If the pattern is cheaper than the fabric needed to experiment, I would go for that IIWY [coward]

That's what I thought......but "Skirt is gathered to seam binding at side seams." confused me a bit - I don't know if I can do that Blush

We really like this but we are worried if we just cut a triangle in lycra the knot will never tie properly as it will stretch

I don't think that is just a triangle, really - it sewn on the short side and then the "knot" comes down from the top. I see no reason why that wouldn't work in lycra (but I know nothing about lycra)

"Skirt is gathered to seam binding at side seams"

I think this just describes what it looks like and what we already had guessed.

Isn't it going to end up as a rucked up belt after a spot of dancing though?

KatyMac · 06/03/2012 21:16

I bought the Kwiksew pattern - I thought it safer (& chances are I'll be doing it again)

Now I just need to sort out embellishments

But as it barely passes her knicker line anyway.....Hmm

Did you ever think you would be encouraging your DD to wear such items of clothing? :o

KatyMac · 06/03/2012 21:49

The design is now on my profile

& I am after an overlayer material that is a bit heavy but moves nicely

Dear God no

But if she had her way there would be NO skirt; so I'm kind of grateful for small mercies - I mean have you seen some of the stuff they wear????

She is covered from shoulder to groin.....legs I can cope with

Does fringing (4 inch) fall properly if sewn on a diagonal?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/03/2012 07:18

Um... It will fall diagonally I guess but I would imagine it would be fine - didn't one of those triangular wraps earlier have fringing on it?

KatyMac · 07/03/2012 07:57

I hope so
I understand there is left & right handed fringing Wink

Cheeky bugger, I was trying to help!

KatyMac · 07/03/2012 08:07

I really wasn't being cheeky - I was laughing at my lack of knowledge.......& believe me there is so much knowledge about sewing I lack....

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/03/2012 08:07

Oh & help you did; I so appreciated your help

Her partners mum doesn't like it Sad

I could cry

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 20:18

Does she get a vote?!

KatyMac · 07/03/2012 20:24

Well DD needs a partner

It's complicated; the ballroom skirt I made to go with the purple leotard is not 'ideal'

She prefers DD's old green & black; both on my profile. I think I do too.

But it will be too small soon & we need to replace; he has a plain black & a black & white shirt - so had we thought of black & white for DD

I like matching latin & ballroom as it gives continuity for the judges......& DD has tended to wear green plus another colour

Oh I don't know

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 20:26

OK, so she does get a vote [grudging]

what doesn't she like about it?

KatyMac · 07/03/2012 20:33

The colour.....I think

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/03/2012 20:46

I wonder if it's because green is 'unlucky'

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/03/2012 21:27

Could I (how could I?) make this?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/03/2012 21:46

Ok - total redesign

White leotard
Drape/over dress made of this

with a big green tassle/feather thing at the bottom of the overdress point, a green flower on the waist at the gather and in her hair?

stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2012 22:12

I saw a blog about making those skirts. I wonder if I can find it again... they take miles of fabric, but I guess you are used to that.
