Hoping someone can help! Ds1 wants to be Hiccup the Viking, I've found the material but now need a pattern to make the vest (not fastened). It needs to be done for Friday and don't have time to go & buy a pattern.

Does anyone have a foolproof way to make <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=hiccup+the+viking&num=10&um=1&hl=en&biw=1280&bih=612&tbm=isch&tbnid=jr2h9ZuxOzKOyM:&imgrefurl=www.thepartyanimal-blog.org/train-dragon-costumes/&docid=ocul_ndnnWHvMM&imgurl=www.thepartyanimal-blog.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/How-to-Train-your-DRagon-Hiccup-Costume.jpg&w=489&h=640&ei=HUNOT8LlHsWi8gPlocnsAg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=547&sig=116448563764276515972&sqi=2&page=1&tbnh=132&tbnw=101&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:18,s:0&tx=38&ty=56" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">something like this?

I woul think if you just had 3 rectangles of fabric, one for the back and two for each side of the front, then you could just hem each piece (depending on what sort of fabric it is) and then attach the front pieces at the shoulder. Then sew each of the the side pieces from the bottom to about halfway up so there was a slit for arms to go through.

I made something similar out of tiger stripe fur fabric for ds so it didn't need hemming and it looked fine for a costume. You could cut out a pattern in newspaper and selotape it together so ds can try it for fit before you cut.

Here's a rough idea of how the three pieces would look if you shape for neck & arm - www.owning-alpaca.com/felting-pattern.html I just cut straight lines at an angle rather than shaping, but again it depends on the fabric - fur fabric is particularly forgiving!

Thank you so much suzi, just what I was looking for! I have limited sewing skills but I think even I can manage that Smile
