Seeing machine - best for a beginner?

I can do basic sowing by hand eg hemming, repairs to clothes. However I would really like to get a sowing machine. To begin with will mostly be used for hemming and would like to alter some curtains. Once ive got the hang of it I would like to have a go at some tougher projects.

Can anyone recommend a starter sowing machine? I don't want to spend too much in case I'm terrible at it. Or can you recommend what features to look for as may scour car boots/eBay.

If anyone has a good beginner book recommendations I would appreciate it.
