Piping a cushion?

Can anyone give me any tips on piping a cushion. Have tried a couple of times with piping / braid and whilst it looks OK, it doesn't quite look professional. Couple of main issues :

  1. Don't seem to get very sharp corners - piping isn't as flush to fabric in corners - not sure how I can improve this?
  1. Where the 2 ends of the braid / piping meet - can't seem to get that need either. Piping was better as I could at least try to join the ends of the piping. The braiding just ended up fraying when I tried to join it, so ended up trying to hide both ends inside the cover which made it look bulky.

Any help gratefully received.
P.S. I am a complete novice (you don't say!) and have a sewing machine that I only know how to work with the basic running stitch!

Are you using a zipper foot to get as close to the piping/braid as possible? I don't do right angled corners, I make them curved.

Do you butt the ends of the piping together, then place one of the bias binding over the other with the raw edge tucked in? Then sew across the seam allowance to ensure it stays put?

I don't use braid much but when I have I've crossed the two ends over and tucked the raw ends in cushion seam, is a bit bulky but hide it at the middle bottom of the cushion.

Thank you - I'm not using the zipper foot (don't really know what one is - I told you I was a novice!) - just the ordinary foot that a really old Singer machine has!! Useful tips - thank you!

There is a really good guide to doing this on YouTube - I've got no idea is this link is going to work as on phone Check out this video on YouTube:

But it explains very clearly- in general Pegs. Tutorials are very good!

You definitely need a zipper foot.

Good luckSmile
