I have started making cold process soap, it has turned into such a good hobby. Its quite expensive for all the materials that you need, but it gives you a great sense of achievment when you create a bar of soap. Is there any other soapers out there????

How do you make soap...?!

SOAPER · 21/02/2012 13:10

iTS A COMBINATION OF OILS AND LYE AND THEN YOU COLOUR AND FRAGRANCE IT USING COSMETIC COLOUR AND EITHER ESSENTIAL OILS OR FRAGRANCE OILS. OH AND THEN OF COURSE LYE WHICH GIVES YOU THE CHEMICAL REACTION THAT MAKES YOUR OILS TURN INTO SOAP

I have always been interested in body products and started off making bath bombs and melt and pour soap, then I decided to give cold process soap a go, its a bit more complicated process but when you get the hang of it, its really gets you hooked. Its really popular in America but not as so in UK. There is plenty videos on the internet with people showing you how to make it.

I've tried a couple of times and both turned out shit. Dunno why as have followed recipes to the letter.

I think its practise makes perfect, the more you do it the better you seem to get.The mixture can seize on you quite quickly, so you have to get to know your slow moving fragrance oils, as some of them work really fast and cause you mixture to sieze and then its like soap on a spoon. I give a lot of my soaps to friends and they say they would not go back to using bought soap as they have so many chemicals in them like sls and more .When you make soap its olive oil, caster oil ,coccoa butter, shea butter all ingredients good for your skin and for anyone with skin conditions

Soaper, could you post me a recipe please thats worked for you? I've used one off the internet and one from a book, but if I could try one that I know has worked for someone in real life I'll give it another go. Thanks.

If you are looking for a recipe thats really basic I got this recipe out of a soap book and its the one I used time and time again when I just started out with great results. Its a 2 pound batch, 1 pound 2oz olive oil, 8oz coconut oil, 6oz palm oil 4.8oz lye, 12oz of water, superfat at trace with 2tbls of caster oil 2tbls of essential or fragrance oil and 1tsp of colour.Always check the weight of your lye on a lye calculator brambelberry.com has got one.Your measurements should always be spot on.

Thankyou, I'll give that a go next week.

If you are trying to get your soap white in colour use titanium dioxide 1tsp per lb of oils.Try to use a light olive oil as some are really yellow and its quite hard to colour, especially if you use extra virgin olive oil, your better just getting a grade 1 olive oil, I just pick that up at the supermarket.
