Holes in clothes after washing - does it happen to you as well ?

Hi there,

I would be really grateful for your advise if this is happening to you as well or if I am the only one.

It happens to me quite frequently that I discover small holes in my clothes just after washing. I am normally quite careful and even put bras and tricky things in a separate wash bag but it still happens.

It would be great if you could tell me if this is happening to you as well and if so, do you know of any easy method of mending them apart from the old needle and thread ?

It would be great if you could let me know.

Thank you very much for your help

How old is your washing machine?, sounds like your drum or seal could be damaged, try running your hand round the inside see if you can feel anything rough, maybe it's time to buy a new machine, or at least get somebody to come & look at this one.

It only happens if I have been using fabric softener.

Hmm how curious! i would suggest not using softener, do you have a tumble dryer you can get the softener sheets that you pop in the dryer...

That is really strange, you think it could be to do with fabric softner? Its definitely not my machine, its fairly new and i checked the drum

I used to have the same problem. I could never understand why or how most of the clothes would come out with holes in! My MIL suggested it could be a broken wire from a bra stuck in there or overloading the washing machine. I never did find out as i had to get a new machine at that time but i have never had any trouble with this one. I have always used fabric conditioner too.

Thanks for your advise Msdunny, maybe it is my machine then! I do tend to overload the machine sometimes admittedly but still can't see why that should cause the problem. But if you never had that problem again after buying a new machine, then it must be to do with the machine. I will have to get it checked.

I have had this problem too. About 2 years ago there was another thread on it, a lot of guessing at the problems but everything seemed to be ruled out by other people. I have a new machine and it's still happening. Bloody annoying.

i blame fabric conditioner too! Or other productls like stain removers. Since I have cut down on usage, the holes appear much less. Scoop of old fashioned washing soda works just as well as fabric conditioner and also good stain remover.

I had a look around on Google and found at least 30 different websites discussing about this problem. Seems to be a wide spread phenomenon and nobody can explain it. Very odd. I will try the washing soda idea.
