Nice fabrics for a little girls dress?

I'm thinking of trying to make pillowcase dresses for my DDs, followign this tutorial here and I'd like to find some lovely fabric, can anyone recommend somewhere to buy it from?

fabricland has lovely fabric for around £3 pm, if you dont have a branch nearby, they have a (hideous) website. (usual florals & ginghams)

I'll go and have a look at those thanks. I think I'll start off with some cheap fabric and if it turns out well I'll make a few more in nicer fabric. I'll go and have a peruse and see what I can find. Thanks.

Do you think I could make a pillowcase dress with this corduroy here, or do you think it has to be a more lightweight fabric?

I am not sure how that fabric would gather & if the fabric would look right for the style. It might also need thicker ties (and therefore a thicker "casing" for the ties)

There is also this free pattern - you could do thicker ties or just put straps on & forget about ties.

I have only made a few bits so I am in no way an expert!

you could try TKmax, supermarkets, charity chops for quilt covers to practice on (TK max often have 100% covers & works out cheaper than buying fabric per metre) and IKEA do really cheap fabric & quilt covers too.

In the end I made this dress and it turned out really well, much better than I thought it would. I just made it with some left over fabric I had so I'm going to treat myself to some lovely fabric from FabricRehab to make another. The only problem is trying to decide which, there are so many nice fabrics!

hi soylentclean i just loved the dress you made. im new to sewing but i did learn to sew in school 20 years ago. do you think id be ok with this pattern. my biggest problem is findng pdf patterns that i can print up to scale. who did you copy and cut this to scale?

Tayto To be honest, I think if I can make this dress I think anyone could. Its the first dress I've made in about 15 years so I'm pretty new to it, only having done sewing at school before that.
This pattern is an american one and it says it is to be printed to 'letter paper' but its not the same size as A4 so I had to change that and then print it onto A4 plain paper. Then I just sellotaped all the pieces together and then cut it out and pinned to the fabric like a normal pattern and it worked fine. Give it a go, even if you just do it in cheap fabric to start off with to see if you can.

sorry to be a pain soylentclean but can i ask a question about the printing of the pattern. when i get the pdf file do i just print each piece then tape them together. i bought a pdf file from etsy of a really cute little dress but when i got it i couldnt print to scale so i scrapped it!!!!!! did you have to do anything to your printer to get it to print the file?

If the PDF is in an A4 format you can just print, sellotape together and cut. If it isn't in that format you would need to save it into that format, then print.

How to do that though was tricky, my techy DH did me and apparently it involved installing a virtual printer to create a second PDF which was in A4..... I have no idea!

soylent thats me out then as im useless on the computer and worse with the all new singing and dancing printer that does everything but print what i want lol. ill try etsy and see if i can find someone on there that has A4 ready pdf patterns. thanks for your help x

Well done on making your dress!

I saw a similar pattern a few months back in SEW HIP. It is a monthly magazine and is due out at the end of this week :) It often has at least one childs pattern.
