Any craft ideas for making a gift for men in their upper 30's going on seventies (I'm struggling for crafting ideas for Hubby, brother in law, father in law and father) - help!! why are men always so hard for gifts?!

Knit him a jumper.

Or some socks.

moondog · 13/12/2005 21:17

Scarf
Glasses case

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 21:17

so don't craft for them. they hate that sort of crap! get them a book instead

colditz · 13/12/2005 21:19

Bookmark.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 21:19

homemade bookmark. yup, that would pretty much kill christmas for me

colditz · 13/12/2005 21:21

Well, it was a shot in the dark!

I know nothing of this craft business. If I don't know what to get someone, they get chocolate and smellies.

I've been thinking about knitting my FIL a tie.

But he's absolutely impossible to shop for, so I may as well craft.

psml pph.
How about a felt pincushion then??

I admit it-my glasses case idea was pathetic!!

moondog · 13/12/2005 21:22

Since when did 'craft' become a verb????

(I'm crafting like crazy this winter....
Is this how it is used then???)

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 21:23

sorry. I'm telling it like it is this evening...

I'd at least use a felt pincushion moondog (unlike your average 40yr old red blooded male)and if my 5 yr old made it I'd actually like it.
But a hand macramed bookmark from my SIL would make me slit my wrists.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 21:24

It's a perfectly acceptable transitive verb, moondog! E.g. I am currently crafting an example of the craft as a verb.

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 13/12/2005 21:24

DIY condoms!

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 21:24

Granted, none of us are using it as a transitive verb, but still ...

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 13/12/2005 21:24

sorry, I'll go now.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 21:25

it isn't a word. it is just invented by americans to give home-produced tat legitimacy...

oh god I'd better parp myself.

colditz · 13/12/2005 21:25

Grey wool, knitted, hey presto, a scarf.

colditz · 13/12/2005 21:26

And none of you are being very supportive of the OP! She's after ideas, not a ticking off.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 21:26

that isn't crafting. that is knitting. which is a perfectly acceptable pastime, which is why it has a word ALL OF ITS OWN to describe it

moondog · 13/12/2005 21:26

Macrame.... gah!!!

Dh is clearing his mother's house this week (she died last week) and is threatening to bring home his groovy string and nail 70's pictures back home from her loft where they have been (very wisely) hidden for years.

I asked if they were done on orange canvas. He couldn't understand why his confirmation of this sent me into hysterics.

AChristmasCarolinamoon · 13/12/2005 21:28

take no notice fairi - everyone needs e.g. a woolly hat, gloves, a scarf at this time of year. Who doesn't lose at least two of each per year? They would be nice and welcome, I'm sure (better than another Sudoku book or whatever old men get).

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 13/12/2005 21:28

i BET you one of them is of an owl. I bet you I bet you I bet you!

Now you have to let him bring them home so I can find out if I'm right.

philippat · 13/12/2005 21:28

food
coffee mug (can you throw pots? )
um... knitted tv remote cosy?
hat maybe at a pinch

NotQuiteCockney · 13/12/2005 21:30

Hmm, I could make him a hat/scarf. I've already made a hat for MIL. I have some chunky yarn that would make a nice scarf, and knit up fast. I should see if I have any nice butch scarf textures.

moondog · 13/12/2005 21:31

psml!
I'll find out tomorrow. I have my money on a sailing boat!
