Please inspire me, I'm new to all this! Anything Xmassy will do apparently. I don't have a sewing machine - can sew by hand but not huge amounts. I guess I'm looking for maximum impact with minimum effort, but don't want something that looks like a shop-bought cop-out.

I'm supposed to dress up too, and DD2 (3 months) will also be there but we're just the supporting artists so I reckon a bit of tinsel will do for us

Angel. White pillowcase with holes for head and arms. Tinsel sash. Wings optional, tinsel and crepe paper over bent coathangers with elastic loops to put arms through. Halo - alice band with further wire coathanger with tinsel.

A veritable snap! Will also have homemade brownie points plus looks a bit retro. My mum had one like this (she is 60!)

You could do something similar for the baby by cutting a head hole in the middle of a muslin, poncho style then tying tinsel round the middle.

This also works for bigger kids with bigger rectangles of material if your little one is the wrong size for a pillow case.

Hope this is useful!

Candle. Red tights, red jumper, "flame" attached to headband - either painted or coloured glitter (then dd could help perhaps) - my mum made this costume for me for a brownie party when I had forgot to tell her it was fancy dress - took her 10 mins flat!!
