Haven't made anything before hut really want to try sewing, what would you recommend?

So really want to try sewing, not really bothered what I try first but can hand or machine (although I have never used a machine I have access to one).

Obviously needs to be quite easy, have got a few bits of material already.

I think it's nice to make something you want/need so you actually use it iykwim.

Brooch? Drawstring bag (for laundry, perhaps)? Small purse for change? Tote bag? There's loads of free tutorials online for things like this.

I have two girls (1 & 4) and there's lots of easy dress patterns.

I'd suggest something small and useful. Maybe a cushion or a laundry bag.

Anything in particular you'd recommend?

I got a sewing machine for Christmas and am trying to teach myself. I've had a couple of cloth kits - not cheap but have allowed me to skip (for now) the scary pattern/cutting step and just get stuck into sewing.

If you're not familiar with a machine then making something with lots of long straight seems might be a good place to start. Curtains, tea towels and pillow cases are classic beginner projects. You can find some good simple aprons as well, which might be a bit more useful.

When it comes to choosing clothing patterns my mum, who used to sew a lot, always reckoned the fewer pattern pieces there are the easier the garment is likely to be to make - so maybe start with a tunic style dress and work up to fancier things.

(that said, I've done very little sewing since I left school but managed to make dd one of these coats without too much hassle. I am coming round to the view that time is so precious I need to try and make patterns I like from fabric I'll wear, or that dd likes. Finding a source of good cheap fabric helps!)

I started sewing last week, so far I have made chest strap pads for my pushchair which were really easy and tonight I am hoping to finish a pushchair liner and start on this dress I am also considering making some of these for a friends little ones who are teething
