I am getting married next year (have started this thread about it).

Anyway, lots of people have suggested doing my own invites.

Well, first of all I wouldnt have the faintest idea where to start, where to get the bits from and how much it will save me in the end.

Secondly, i am absolutely rubbish at arty, crafty things, my handwriting is not great so i can see it ending up being a waste of money.

Any advice on this would be helpful.

A PC and printer will save the need for any handwriting.

Someone else will be better placed to give you advice on where to get stuff from - it depends where you are, if you want to see the bits in real life or are happy to go for online ordering.

Glueing and sticking for adults terrifies me so will be asking lots JM.

Have a look here for your basic card blanks. The more you buy of each item,the more discount you get. So consider the same size that you may want to use for both invitations and thank you cards.

I am lucky enough to live near a Paper Mill shop where you can buy your own card for a fraction of the cost of pre-folded cards. I did invest in a folder board (about £7-15 now)which not only speeds things up but gives a lovely professional fold. But you can do the same job with extra time, a ruler and the back of a knife.

There are some lovely free fonts available to download for your inserts. My advice is to keep the design simple and clean, just a pretty mulberry paper backing and perhaps a flower..or this...or that....oooohhh...good luck..love weddings.

I made my invitations actually - designed a Celtic knot, had it printed in gold on cream card, bought some "linen look" ink jet paper and printed all the inserts on this (being technically minded, I mail merged the guest list with the invitation wording to save me writing all the names in afterwards!). Then I just glued the inserts in with a Pritt stick. I had enough of the card bits printed to use as thank you cards afterwards.

The simplest one I do is also the most effective, a claddagh stamped onto purple textured card then layered onto lilac card. I emboss the claddagh (really easy... stamp with pigment ink, tip powder on, shake off and heat with a heat gun until the powder melts) in silver. The colours of course can be changed to suit the theme.

I would be quite happy to lend the Claddagh id it appelas to you (I could either send you the stamped images to use, or lend the stamp).

Also, there are lots of idea on the docrafts website, or you could just do a really easy one with a fiskars mini emboss. here , you just out the card in upside down, use the pen to 'colour in' the design and you get that classy raised effect qwhere the design pushes through the card. really elegant in white. I got the hang of this in under ten minutes, the set to do it costs under a tenner excluding cards (get cheap pre folded cards on ebay) and it is the easiest technique I ever used.
