Crochet Playmat/Rug?

moomiemoo · 01/03/2011 11:13

I'm thinking about crocheting a playmat/baby rug instead of a blanket for a baby due in September.

Any advice on what yarn would work best or ideas for a pattern?

Anything baby can catch fingers/toes in is a big NO - go for a very fine weave pattern.

agree with candleshoe - a crochet playmat sounds like a broken finger waiting to happen. Anything with holes the size of a cellular blanket will be fine though.

I have a book from my library called "Crocheted throws and wraps" by melody griffiths, in it there is a pattern for a landscape play blanket, its basically green fields and hills and some blue sky and a sun, just had a quick look at it and it doesnt look like it has holes in to catch babys finger.

The blanket looks great for a farmyard setting and you could even crochet the animals yourself when baby gets bigger.
Or how about a load of primary coloured sqaures made in double crochet and joined together. maybe Ravelry also have some patterns.

Thanks. Hadn't thought about the broken finger issue (ouch!) so will make sure the pattern is totally suitable before starting.

Thanks for the book ref. cloudpuff will see if there are any copies in local libraries.

I made something like this for my dd2. It's lovely and tactile. I made it in green and added some flowers. Took bloody ages though and used a lot of yarn. I just used Stylecraft dk life though, it's a wool acrylic mix and has survived at least one wash!

Not quite playmat but I cut up a sheet and crocheted it by hand to make a rug for dds room. It's just a circle with scalloped edge but because it was a cotton sheet its lovely ans thick and soft for feet

That sounds amazing ilythia.

I've been looking for a rug for DDs room and haven't been able to find one in the right colours. I'm assuming you just used a new sheet and thick crochet hooks?

Do you have any pics of your rug ilythia - I've been wanting to make a crocheted rag rug for my living room for ages but not sure where to start.
What size crochet hook did you use?

Thanks

Sorry, have been off MN for a bit. I didn't use a hook, I meant literally by hand. It just ended as a circle, can get a pic later for you, but I cut the sheet into alternating strips so it didn't cut all the way through and then used by hands as a big hook, so poking a finger through the loop to pick up the 'yarn'

I would love to see a pic if you get a chance ilythia.
I've just cut lots of strips from an old pair of jeans - sewed them together and started to crochet them with a 12mm hook, but wasn't working too well. Have unravelled and just trying to think of another way - never though of crocheting by hand.
