I thought a kit would make an excellent Xmas present for my SIL (she likes crafts and is quite creative but doesn't have the confidence to just try). So I found her website but I feel the choice is rather limited and not quite right.

Could anyone suggest some good, funky designers of practical cross stitch kits?

Yes! It is Emily Peacock. I really like the idea of something that is funky but her kits do not really suit SIL's décor.
