Could anyone point me towards a reliable easy sock pattern(knitting)?
I'm determined to master double pointed needles, and make my own socks.Ive got a pattern for 2 needles, and its quite good, but I cannot get the heel turning bit on 4 needles. Is there a good tutorial/video anywhere I could look at? (with lots of pictures)
thanks in advance

Can't help you I'm afraid but socks are my knitting nemesis - for some reason I find the whole heel thing scary. I don't have trouble with DPN - I've knitted gloves for example, but socks are another matter.

I think part of the problem is that sock yarn is quite fine so it isn't something you can have a go at without lots of work to get to the heel bit. Chunky socks would be good!

If you don't mind I shall loiter for advice too!! Smile

I found socks really hard to get my head round at first, mainly because I couldn't visualise what I was supposed to be doing. The pattern which made things make sense for me was the excellent 4 DPN tutorial on this website: www.cometosilver.com/socks/. This is the specific tutorial for DPNs: www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm, so just scroll down/click through for the heel-turning instructions. The author uses lots of photos and, crucially, explains why you're doing certain things rather than just giving a curt instruction. I still refer to the heel instructions on this tutorial, several pairs of socks later! Hope this helps... :)

i really don't see the point of knitting socks. takes forever adn rthen you wear thema few times and they wear out. knit a nice hat instead

Are you trying to turn the heel on four dps? If so, it won't work because the heel is done on two pins always.
Forgive me if this is trying to teach your (oma) to suck eggs.

Thankyou florlegia! those are very, very helpful.
My difficulty has always been not being able to see the work being done - watching somebody doing it is the best way I learn.Turning a heel always left me in a fog of incomprehension, and giving up in a big tangle.Perhaps I can complete a pair now!

Also,Cereal, hand knitted socks are utterly blissful to wear, comfy feet = happy outfit! well worth the effort IMO.
And Neicie, I've used DK yarn for my 2 needle pattern, and they are really quite wearable, and pretty quick.just not as "proper socky" as DPN knitted ones, more bed socky.
Thanks all for advice, off to practice sock now.

No problem: glad to have helped! I remember bouncing up and down on the sofa having turned my first heel, exclaiming "It works! It works! It's like magic!". DH was puzzled to say the least...:)
