absent nasal bone

Hi! Having just been through a very worrying few days I thought I'd add my experience in case anyone is going through the same situation. My 12 week scan and blood tests were all good apart from the nasal bone which had not fully ossified so was put in the risk assessment as absent. This changed my risk from 1:4500 to 1:208. Although this isn't too different from the general risk for my age (36) the risk seemed too high so we opted for CVS the same day. We received the results by telephone 48 hours later at 9pm! The news was all good and we were impressed by the whole team at Kings College London. Hope this is helpful for anyone going through this stressful time. I found that the research into the nasal bone is relatively new so there isn't that much information to read apart from very scientific and worrying reports!

Glad you had good CVS results, donkey. It is so worrying when scans show up possible issues but as you say, nasal bone is still a relatively new 'marker'; I remember reading another thread on here a while back, and I think when the nasal bone appears/ossifies can vary up to even 13 or 14wks. However, like the nuchal fold itself, it is something that can be looked for/measured; unless diagnostic tests give absolute confirmation I think the only other way is to have a later scan to see if there has been any change or any other obvious abnormalities... but that wait does make for a stressful time for anyone living through this.

Congratulations for you though, hopefully you will now have a stress-free pregnancy!
