First trimester screening

Looking for any other stories out there. I got my screening results back and have a 1:70 risk of Down syndrome and have been referred for nipt which was taken today and waiting on results.

All looked well on scan, normal nt measurement of 2.1 (they actually took three in total 1.4,1.6 and 2.1 because baby was moving about so much). My hcg came back really high at 6.88, my Papp a was 0.78 and my nuchal translucency was 1.14.

im also age 33

what is chance of my high risk screening resulting in high risk nipt or if someone has had similar.

Hi - I don’t have the answers but I am going through similar. We have an amnio booked for tomorrow as our risk came back 1:85. NT was 1.1, Papp A 0.51 and HCG 3.8. The waiting around is awful and is really mentally challenging! I have found reading through forums to be helpful and there seems to be lots of ladies who have high screening results!

wishing you all the best!

Kerry282 · 03/12/2025 21:35

Did you go straight for amino or do the nipt first. It’s just such a mind boggle and can’t believe how unprepared we were for that phone call.

hope it goes well tomorrrow your in my thoughts and I know I’ve been scrolling Reddit like no tomorrow

We didn’t opt for NIPT as we wanted certainty - my anxiety levels are through the roof as we had an early miscarriage immediately before we fell pregnant this time. We of course know the risks with the amnio but after talking with the midwives they suggested maybe amnio or a cvs would be better for us (we couldn’t do the cvs due to placenta placement so consultant said come back for amnio) It’s such an impossible decision isn’t it!

It really is impossible I just think how are you supposed to function day to day not knowing. I don’t think my results come back to next week and you can’t help but think well that’s it we will be the 1.4% or the 1 in 70 with it cause bad luck follows us.

i completely understand your pain this was after x3 chemical pregnancies so a very much wanted, loved and planned baby xx

Yes - I have found work to be a good distraction but it’s still constantly on my mind! I think my results will be back early next week - everything crossed for both of us!

I’m so sorry to hear about your chemicals - it makes this pregnancy even more special!

Wanted to reach out and say I’m in a similar situation.

cvs is booked for tomorrow
my NT was 4.8, HCG 2.4 and PAP-A 0.6
with a 1 in 17 risk for downs and the doctor telling us to prepare for bad news

im petrified, i was so excited to hit 12 weeks to tell everyone and come out of first trimester, but now i feel like im under a black cloud but i have read many success stories so not giving up hope yet

I just got my nipt back this morning and it was negative so it supersedes everything now. Did you get nipt or go straight for cvs.

i honestly cannot even begin to express my empathy with the worry you must be feeling too. All my wishes are that it comes back negative for you. The combined screening test honestly is just a worry xx

Ah that’s great news and I’m so happy for you! Do you need to have any further tests from here?

we were advised to go straight to the cvs as my nt was so high. I have it tomorrow and keeping everything crossed! Thanks so much for your wishes xx

No apparently nipt is 99.9% accurate so we are happy enough with that and now just treated as normal.
fingers crossed this was just a wee bump in the road

So relieved to hear your results, @Kerry282!

Our results came back as 1 in 89 and the NIPT was on Thursday so I'm constantly checking my phone for The Call now. I so relate to what you say about rationally knowing the chance is slim but also worrying that you will be in the minority nonetheless.

DH and I had chatted about the "what ifs" before the 12wk scan but we never in a million years thought we'd receive that phone call. I hope out news is as good as yours!

Aw my heart is honestly with you with this I really hope you are hearing something soon. Waiting especially over the weekend was traumatic enough.
I know it is something goes might I be the 1 in however many because as nice as the nurses are in trying to calm you it’s down to science.

we were the exact same position and had discussed beforehand just didn’t ever think it would happen to us.

The sooner they just accept the cost of nipt for everyone the better instead of combined screening. Putting people through it for no reason doesn’t help at all.

did you find out your figures for everything or just 1:89

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 09/12/2025 14:14

I just know it's 1 in 89. The NT measurement was 2.9mm. I googled it afterwards just because and I noted it was high but it was still below what I could work out was the risk threshold. The midwife didn't mention it at the time so I didn't read too much into it.

I don't know what all the other scores and measures mentioned are and I can't see them on my Badger Notes. Although, even if I could, noone has explained what they mean.

You have probably done lots of reading so ignore this if you already know but as far as I know it’s the NT measurement, age and x2 of your hormone levels that are taken to come out with a combination.

Im 33 (still feel young so hadn’t even thought it would influence risk but apparently that put me already at 1 in 545 which is a dramatic drop from someone in their 20s so depending on age don’t underestimate how much influence this weighs) then there is the hcg hormone and Papp a hormone which they just measure against average and if it deviates away from 1 then your risk goes further.

Your NT measurement isn’t too bad at all as long as it’s below 3.5, if you want too your midwife will be able to tell you measurements.

please let us know how you get on 🤞🏻

I haven't done much reading on the tests themselves so this is really interesting, thank you!
I'm 33 too and although I know that's edging towards a "geriatric" pregnancy, my odds 2yrs ago came back tiny, as did those of a friend a few years older so I didn't think age would add much.
And actually, my PAPP-A is on Badger Notes and was 0.73. I can't see the HCG anywhere though.

I think joining this thread has been somewhat reassuring as it seems the odds might be "high" but the markers are all on the less worrying side.

I'm expecting the phone call tomorrow (midwife said a week and tomorrow will be Day 7) regarding the NIPT and I'll report back with the results.

Hey - did you get your results? I am still waiting for amnio results so had to book a private NIPT in the end as we have been waiting for such a long time and the anxiety is at an all time high!

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 15/12/2025 17:47

Sorry for not coming back! I updated another thread I was on and then totally forgot about this one!

Yes! My results came back 7 days after the test and they were "low chance". It was such a relief and I feel like a different person now!

I hope you also get some good news soon!!

Oh I’m so pleased for you! We are still waiting on amnio results … they couldn’t do the quick results due to maternal cell contamination….

we decided to do a private NIPT as results should come back quicker. It’s such a stressful time as this has now been going on for 4 weeks since original screening results 😭

GingerFox2021 · 16/12/2025 18:16

My situation was a bit different.
We had a very low Combined screening results on NHS, so I thought for reassurance I’ll do NIPT, but to my surprise NIPT came back as a high risk. Did Amnio which was clear/all good. I’m 32 weeks now.

Anonnimouse92 · 23/01/2026 17:24

Gingerfox2021 hi so your screening at 12 week scan and nipt test came back high risk and amino came back all good? 🙊 pleased yous had a positive outcome!! 💖 currently awaiting results of nipt and its excruciating

@Anonnimouse92 hi.
so, our combined screening at 12 weeks was very low and all scans were good. NIPT came back as a high risk. Yes, Amnio was clear/good.
i hope your results will come back as low risk. Waiting is difficult.

Gingerfox2021 ahhh im so pleased you got a really good outcome my scan seemed normal i had a nt of 1.8mm and the woman didn't spot anything out of the ordinary that's why I was so shocked at our results it came back my papp a is 0.7 according to notes even though she said 0.6 basically been told to expect something coming back im praying if any has too its downs we got 1/6 for that and 1/18 for edwards and patau which is crazy low i have seen some with lower but I've had to dig like crazy literally turning myself mad waiting we have until Thursday i think and just so stuck in limbo so there is still a bit hope if nipt comes back high too so sorry you experienced this too its literally one of the hardest things ever hope yous are all well now. What were your results the screening came back at first if you dont mind me asking 💖
